my first (mini) stash - now what?

A nice problem to have!

So I now have 4 kits not started, plus one on the bench, and one on backorder, so a total of 6 kits in my stash. Having 6 kits when I only have time to sit down and work on them a few times a week is way more than I need, so I have resolved to not buying any more kits until I get down to 2 kits again. Trouble is how do I resist the temptation? First part is easier, I can resist going to my favorite websites to go shopping. The second part is more difficult, which is resisting the temptation after seeing what people on the forums are up to. I love reading about techniques people are using, and seeing (another) subject I think would be cool to have. Maybe I should limit myself to the general discussion in the hope that I would see fewer reviews and WIPs [:)] Or spend more time on the bench and less time lurking around here [:D]

Ah well, like I said, nice problem to have for the first time, and my modeling budget can take a needed rest for a while.

Yeah ok. First off, 6 kits is not a stash. It’s the beginning of a serious addiction, or wasted money on a hobby that you will get tired of in a month or so. HOPEFULLY, it’s not the latter!! Tell yourself you are stopping at 6 until you’re down to 2. Go ahead. It won’t happen. By the time you have finished reading this response you will have purchased 3 more kits. You just may not know it yet.

What do you like? Armor or aircraft? I’ll use aircraft for my example. You will crack open the box to a beautiful Tamiya P-47. About half way through you will start researching weathering, painting etc. You’ll stumble across a WIP of a 109 that will inspire you. You will order said kit. Begin vicious cycle…a FW 190, Corsair, Dauntless, P-51, 3 Spitfires, B-17, and countless more later; then, and only then, will you have a stash.

I agree with proferssordeath. It will not be a stash until you reach 10 times what you have currently in inventory. I am currently sitting on 500 plus with an additional 50 to 75 paper model dowloads plus printed out projects. The question of paper or plastic on the bench is settled by having two benches with projects on them. Hopefully the hobby will be a permenant part of your life and you will find it as enjoyable as we have over the years.You have the beginning of the addiction. I still crave new kits although I find financial resources a bit scarce right now. I wish you many hours of happy modelling.[proplr]

Okay, so what you have isn’t really a stash, nor is it even the beginnings of a stash, but it is at least an indication that you may one day have a starter-stash…

Now what ?? Just build baby.I have a modest stash of about 25,I feel they will all be built someday.I will however never have one of those giant stashes of hundreds or thousands of kits.Makes no sense to me,family just has to get rid of them once I’m dead.There is always a new kit that you will have to have,so have fun.

I have a stash of around 150 kits. I should build those before my retirement (I am 33 now) so I can buy more. My wife thinks otherwise. So at 6 kits…I would not even call that a stash.

Wow I really feel inadequate now. See I know there are guys out there with 500+ kits, but I thought my measly 120 or so was clawing its way into the stash zone. Gee thanks, now I am going to have to go out and put bigger tires on my car or buy a bigger TV to get some of my manlyhood back.

Ah, but what is called a stash is relative. Relative to having only a couple of kits on hand, I have a stash.

I think Tojo72 has it right though, keep the stash to some sort of size you can actually build.

I have to assume people buy kits because buying is fun for them, or it is some compulsion, either case is OK by me. I want to know that I will be able to build everything I have bought, partly because that is one of the goals I set coming back into the hobby, and partly because I do not have that kind of expendable income. I’m not criticizing, if collecting huge amounts of kits is part of your enjoyment of the hobby, live it up!

But no one has given me any ideas how I can try to meet my resolution of not buying any more kits[;)] (at least until I get some of the “stash” built)

Well, MGH, i hate to break it to you, but there really is no way to meet that resolution.

Mine is at about 35ish. It’s gone up and down like the stock market over the past 5-6 years. I realize that I’ll never finish it, because I can’t resist a good sale on a kit that I really want and that will always keep the stash growing.

I have around 50 in mine and anything can inspire you to buy more like every time i watch something on history, H2, Military Chan., etc etc I see something that would either make a cool dio or wow I’m going to build (insert plane here) with that nose art

Why would you try to resist stashing? I’m confused by the question already…

(And without really realizing it, I’ve crossed into the triple-digit zone this past spring. [:$])

The inner psyche tells us that stashing is a good form of therapeutic healing from the stresses and complications of everyday life. At the same time outside forces that surround us such as evil women, kids and parents tell us we are irrational. Don’t resist the stash my friends; embrace it for the sake of your own mental health.

A little true story about “stash happenings”

The Airfix A-4B recently came out,at around the same time, a really great decal sheet for 7 aircraft came out for it

I hurried up and bought 3 of the Airfix kits from Hannants, paying the overseas shipping, and spending the time in waiting

I decided that I wanted 4 more of the new aircraft to build,so, Hannants was sold out,my LHS guy had 2, the rest were already gone

now, I have the new sheet, and all of the unbuilt aircraft from some of my old sheets,and the Airfix Skyhawk is “so sold out” that a decal MAKER I know,doesn’t have one yet,so, he can’t design decals to fit the kit

Good thing I have a stack of Fujimi A-4B in the stack also,and a large stack of the old Esci Skyhawks and some IPMS A-4B conversions,or I couldn’t possibly build “one of each squadron”

pick an aircraft,and I had to stash it, or not get it today, Fujimi A-6, Fujimi A-7, Fujimi A-4, Airfix A-4, and soon the supply of Academy F-8E will run out (they have already changed the decals in a different release)

plus,a stash is a great way to vary the weapons loadout,there are still some weapons in kits that have not been released in the little weapons sets
