Well, finally after about 2.5 months of work, my P-36A Hawk is done. Kinda. I’m still waiting on new “barrels” in the form of tubing. the LHS is out of the size I need right now. Anyway, this is the 1/48 Academy Kit. Its built straight from the box, except for the barrels [when they arrive]. Its kit markings, aside from the red tail band which was masked and painted instead of the decal. The finish is Alclad II Chrome over tamiya gloss black. This was my first time using any Alclad product, and I was pleased with the finish. I didnt get a perfect coat, which created a nice weathering to the metal look. I have since used Alclad again on an F4F-3 and it came out great [polished aluminum]. Anyway, here she is. And her smaller counterpart, the OLD Monogram 1/72 Hawk.
Looks really good, Viper… (A little too new, but that’s just my thing) Tricky stuff, if ya ask me… Not sure I wanna tackle the B-29 with the stuff yet… Never tried using a black undercoat either…
Dunno if this is what you do, but I use the styrene-coated wire the either Plastruct or Evergreen puts out for 1/48 50 cal/13mm guns… I strip the stryene off the wire and ‘presto’, tiny gun tubes… There’s a larger size that works great for 20mm and such too…
Thanks guys. Once I get the barrels, I’ll be sure to get more pics, and the underside. lol. I also want to see about getting brighter lighting in my photobooth. For some reason, the pics look very dark.
thanks Joe, wait till you see here finished in person.
Anyway, here are some better pics. I adjusted the lighting in my booth and its much better now. Also added a touch of weathering. Almost thinking it can go without the barrels.
Very nice work on the P-36. Your Alclad paint job came out quite well. I am about to do my first Alclad painting and I hope it comes out as well as yours did.
Thanks guys. The alclad is really easy to use, just make sure you lay down a smooth as glass base coat. And I have seen where you can vary the finish tint by changing the base color for certain panels. I llike it a lot more than Floquil old/bright silver. Its smoother, more realistic, and it actually cleans up much easier than I expected.
