My first aircraft project - Albatros D.V WIP

Hi all.

Other than a BF-109 I did nearly 30 years ago, this is my first foray into Aircraft. I’m predominantly an Armour modeller and this is definitely out of my comfort zone.

While at my LHS, I picked up a 2nd hand kit. It was was partially built and it’s previous owner had already painted the fuselage and wings.

Because I wanted to attempt some wood grain painting, I decide to strip the paint off by giving the model a bath in Mr Muscle. I’ve gone for the lighter wooden colour and have used Tamiya Acrylics for the base coat followed by oils to get the wood grain texture.

Because the kit has been partial done, I’ve decided to complete parts in sub assemblies.
I’ve mixed the colours I’ve got handy to get something close to the box art for the wings and added the decals.


Before setting the fuselage aside to dry, I couldn’t help touching up the metal parts.

Any comments or advice most welcome.

Wow, it looks nice for your first aircraft effort (well, in a long time). I’m interested in how you will tackle the rigging these WWI biplanes had? I do mostly aircraft and have yet to tackle a WWI biplane because of all that rigging, although I do have a Sopwith Camel in my stash.

Looks good marevic. I’m with Aggieman, rigging scares me, I’ll need some therapy for it at some point, preferably at the modeling table! You’ve done a great job with the wooden paneling too, the grain looks just right to me.

I like your work on this one very much indeed! Would you mind sharing which Tamiya colors you used for the wood color? It looks just right to me. Well done so far!

I love building bipes, and the Albatros is one of my faves. Very nice job on the wood grain, but just as impressive is the way you mixed the german mauve color for the wings. I have that color pre-mixed, and your formula looks spot on. I’m very interested in how you did that.

Thanks very much for the comments guys. Being something different for me, I wasn’t sure if I was going down the right track.

No idea how I’ll do the rigging yet. I’m open to suggestions though.

@Frank - the base colour is a mix of Flat White and Buff. From memory it was 5 parts white to 2 parts buff.
For the wood texturing, I used W&N oils. First a mix of burnt umber and white covering the base
colour with some yellow orche and white added here and there. I then used the sponge technique
to create the woodgrain texture.

@Mike - As I pretty much only do Armour, my entire colour collection is pretty much armour based.
I used Tamiya Sky Blue acrlyic with a drop of Flat Red and a couple drops of Flat White to lighten
it up a little. Once the first coat was down and dried, I added a couple drops of Gunze Hobby
Color Clear Red and a little more white to the mix to get a brighter shade and sprayed that
in between the raised/ribbed sections.

Time for another small update. Again, just more detail painting.


Some more decal work and some test fitting. Still have to add the final decals around the tail sections before I add a coat to seal things prior to the wash.
