I joined a junior modeling club about a year and a half ago, and since then, have been dabbling more and more with figs. My first serious fig (not some crap bang-up job on an extra tamiya dude) was a 200mm Erich Hartmann bust that got 1st in Junior figs, 09 IPMS nationals. Some may have remember me posting it forever ago. (I have not been around for soooooooo long…) In march, I tried my hand at sculpting my own figure, and the product is the bust.
The paint and sculpt is a bit crude, I have since improved both techniques but I am rather happy with it for a first attempt. Then I had this 30mm roman guy from andrea. Not too bad either.
Lastly, this was going to be at phoenix for IPMS nats, but our leader who was going to enter it in proxy was really busy. The base is rather rushed, and I simply used a wash instead of shading techniques to pop out the wrinkles. But without further talk… 120mm Tamiya fig…
Can I have comments and advice from you more experienced fig painters? And I apologize for the pics, the camera is good, but my skills with lighting my subject is not. It kinda washed out the shading I did on the Afrika Korp’s guy’s face. I also should have gotten a few side shots… dang. Oh well, may get some more later.
Very nice job, especially for starting out. Just keep practicing! I still have trouble with eyes,sometimes I get them right,others,well lots of repaint.
One point I would mention is to watch the whites of the eyes, especially on smaller figs, I got the same constructive critique on one of my figs on here and they were right. I no longer paint ‘whites’ of eyes on 54mm or 1/35 figs…it avoids the ‘popeye’ look.
Pick up some inexpesive bases from a local craft store,spray them with some of the textured paint avaible and then make a nice scene applicable to the fig. For around $10 you can get enough paint and bases to do many figs…it really adds to the final presentation.
yeah, I just noticed, afrika korps does look a bit pop-eyed. The wonders of photography. On my workbench, he looks ok. I use light gray for the whites, maybe I should switch to a darker gray?
I don’t know about darker gray?? I paint for my display cabinet not photography so i go by what looks good in the light it will be dispayed in. But if I start posting more pics on here may have to change.
Amazing what the camera sees that the eye does not!
yeah, I’m aiming for model contests, so lighting may not always be ideal. Heck, the eyes may have even appeared sunken at '09 Nats, I heard lighting was terrible. Thanks for your input though. The more I get, the better I can get.
