My completed-destroyed T-55

Hi guys, I have completed my entry into the Cold War GB. Here is my destroyed T-55. It is by Trumpeter. All damage is scratch built/done. For weathering I used real rust, some food spices and pastel. Looking forward to all comments and suggestions, enjoy!

Looks pretty good. I like the rust effect. Only thing I see is the road wheels w/o rubber, they would not be a primer gray color. The bare metal would rust (if the rubber burned off) or would at least be a dark metal color if the rubber was worn off. Also, the metal in the hole where a round punched through would be dark as well. Hardened steel as used on tanks is very dark, almost black if unpainted. There should be more oxidized and charred metal where the fenders have burned away and the tank burned up.

What Heavy says as well as the drive sprockets need some weathering also.

Excellent build though! Be very proud.

Food spices!Cool,we can eat it!Nice job.

Thanks about the other tips.

I found a pic on the net where when the round went through it was steal/silver no black around it at all. Again thanks for the other tips.

A very gutty effort. It must be difficult to make a new kit totalled. Since others know more than I, I’d heed there advice. Great build.

Very convincing job on the build. Bryan

Anthony,
Not sure how a destroyed tank would look, but it looks pretty convincing to me.
You are to be commended for building a destroyed tank and the job you’ve done. I have enough trouble trying to build one that’s operational, let alone something of this magnitude. My hat’s off to you.
Joe

Ok I’ll bite. How do you use real rust? Nice effect though.

I just put it on with a brush and sprayed a coat of future, then applied more because some blew off and over and over until the affect is achieved.

veri nice … well done …

Please excuse my ignorance. Is real rust a product you buy? I must be missing something. [%-)]

Interresting, never seen a penetration hole that was silver. Do you have a link to the photo? I have seen them on the battlefield and none were shiny metal holes. May have been the light or camera angle.

Don’t know what Anthony14 used, but you can actually use rust. Find a rusty object and scrape or sand some of the rust off into a powder. Use this powder either dry, or mixed into a thin paste and apply it to your model. Once dry, spray it with dullcote to flatten it and seal it onto the model.

Wow, thats a new one one me! My pea size brain has never come across the concept of srcaping off rust and useing it. Live and learn. Thanks.

matthew9- Yes I did use real rust. not a product. got it of a paint remover can. sanded it with fine paper and got a fine powder and put it on.

Heavy arty- here is the pic… if you have Microsoft PowerPoint copy and past the pic, and make it bigger.

Good work Anthony. I don’t know wether to cry or compliment you though. If it was the tamiya T55 then I would cry. You did an excellent job portraying what you set out to do. [tup]

Thanks all… I was a bit scared about how it was going to turn out because it is my first ‘destroyed’ tank. Other than a few weathering problems it came out way better than I thought. Thanks again everyone!

Anthony,
The entry hole doesn’t look like shiny metal to me. It looks like dark metal as I described with light glinting off it on the right side because it is so smooth from melting when the HEAT round or RPG went through it. I would repaint using a gunmetal color to get the effect, but not shiny aluminum or silver color like you have. Sorry, just doesn’t look right to me. Still looks great and you have done a great job.

[:D] your build is very nicely done, great work.[:D]

Fine job, Anthony! A Trumpeter T-55 has never looked better!
It does take a lot of courage to “destroy” a kit, and your courage paid off. Great job!
