My 1/48 Hasegawa Typhoon 1B (early) - NO PICS

It is without question my favorite all-time WWII airplane so I thought I would build Hase’s early car-door Typhoon. Looked great on the box. Keep in mind that I have absolutely NO artistic talent. First problem was the fit of the fuselage parts around the door. I build kits strictly OOB, so having to do a lot of seam filling and sanding is not my strength - I’d even say it’s a weakness. I didn’t have the proper tools to finish the panel lines after filling, sanding, filling sanding, so MicroMark came to my rescue. I finally ended up using the “closed door” configuration due to my inability to make the open door look right.

Anyway after much more work than I wanted, I’m getting close to the end of this build and I just discovered I don’t seem to have tail wheel for the plane any more [B)]. I have no idea what happened to it. I’m trying to remember if I ever saw it [:D]. Spares box? I don’t have one.

I figure I’ll use a bent piece of sprue to support the rear of my Typhoon, but I am going to finish it! I think I’ll call it “pegleg” and tell everyone that sees it that they used a skid on the tail[:-^].

Despite all that, I still enjoy building models and I have no idea why. When I get her done, I will be posting pics, no matter. This is a warning [:o)]

I would try scratching a tailwheel from a piece of wire and a slice of sprue. I had to do the same thing with a 1/72 Fw-190, when the tailwheel went down the drain while I was cleaning off a bad coat of paint.

You’re working in a larger scale, so it would require a little more detail, of course, but still, it’s an opportunity to try it out. Maybe use a slice of a wooden dowel for the wheel.

Brad

Actually, that may not be a bad idea, once I satisfy myself that it isn’t on the floor somewhere. (picture a guy with a tiny flashlight, on his knees with an optivisor on his head crawling under a table in the basement [:P]) If I wanted to scratch build one, should I just fake it, or should I try to get a reference somehwere to get dimensions?

Thanks ,
