from what i have read they were converted during 1942-1943 so some of them could have been dark yellow coming out of the factory.
My references show them being allocated to the 3rd and the 9th Panzer divisions. Neither of which were in North Africa. I have several hundred, if not thousand, photos from North Africa, and I can’t say that I have seen them there. Maybe someone has a photo…I don’t. Take that as you will…[X-)]
thanks guys
like i said too all my stuff shows gray
i will look some more too
it is just with two i wanted diff colors schemes on the shelf side by side
well they also used them as ambulances too so…
OK, this is why it pays to look at more than just one reference. There were a whole lot more of these built than I was first lead to believe. One book I looked at said something like 50 or so were built. Now it appears that a much larger number, but still unspecified, were built. Page 27 of the Encyclopedia of German Tanks states that as of May, 1944, there were some 611 Panzer I turrets available for use in fixed fortifications, but it doesn’t say how many chassis were still usable for conversion into Munitionsschlepper. While I"m sure that many divisions used these vehicles, it is difficult to find out just exactly which ones. Add the 1st SS Panzer to the list at least…
Conversions were still being carried out at this late stage in the war, (1943 onward) so it should be a fair bet that at least some were repainted. I’ll see if I can find any late war photos, but these vehicles aren’t likely to have caught the PK cameraman’s eye to any great degree.
