MPM's P-63A cockpit

Here are some pics of another project of mine that I started recently.
MPM included a lot of resin for the cockpit. Only the front bulkhead, seat, and stick are plastic. The instrument panel had blank discs for the dials. I painted needles with a #000 brush, and adfded some stenciling also.

I used a set of Eduard USAAF belts.

The left door is glued closed. They fit better than Eduard’s P-39 doors, but still needed trimming. You can see by the position of the throttle why pilots used the door on the right. A real knee-knocker !

In case you’ve never built an MPM kit before, here’s what the injected pieces look like. After cleanup, they are actually fairly well detailed. The kit requires more work than most, but I’m not afraid of that !

Thanks for letting me share another build with you !

Yeah, I have thier vindicator going and thier plastic pieces look similar.
I didn’t have a problem with the 39’s door - but that don’t mean nuthin.
Your cockpit looks great - like to see it installed in the airframe.

Hiya Bill,
I have a few of their 63s… BOY am I lookin forward to building em… Yeah right…hehehe.
I really want to start them but they look like they will have fit problems… Any thing you see so far??
The only reason why I am asking because these kits will be my first MPM builds[:p]
Nice office my friend.

Nice work on the pit. This was one of MPM’s first 1/48 kits & was a true limited run. They have come a long way since as their kits are now hard tooled & provide much better detail & fit. Lately, they have been doing mostly 1/72 scale, but I hope to see more 1/48.

Regards, Rick

Thanks wibhi, Butz, mkhoot, Jason, and Rick !

wibhi - the window portion of the doors on my P-39 didn’t angle in enough to meet the canopy. I built mine with both doors open.

Butz - they are typical limited-run kits. Every piece needs to be cleaned up and dryfitted. All the major pieces (fuselage, wings, tailplane) need dryfitting, trimming, sanding, and filling. The vac canopies need care to fit properly. I cut mine into fore & aft sections so I could use the fuselage’s rollover structure rather than having the vac piece over it. This is an MPM P-63C that I built when it was released (a FEW years ago !). Once you get the seams fitted and cleaned, they look like Kingcobras.

Rick - the only kits I’ve built of theirs are the P-63C, Ar 196, and Fw 189 in 1/48. They are challenging, but you won’t find them by another manufacturer (except FM’s P-63s, I won’t go there !).

Thanks again !
