Moved to Canada!

Hi,
I’ve finally made my move from England to Canada and my stash has now arrived! It’s been almost a year since I did any serious modelling as I had to spend 4 months in the Falklands (Working on Chinooks) at the beginning of the year as my last tour in the RAF.

Once my stash arrived though I met a slight problem - my better half realised just how big it was. I had it split up into many different boxes, a few kits here and a few kits there. Unfortunately, she soon spotted that there semed to be kits coming out of evey box and I was caught out[:I]

It was all packed up into 2 big boxes (about 70 kits) and a certain ‘rule’ was introduced:

  1. Though shalt not go buying any more kits until one of those big boxes is empty.[:(]
Oh well, best get building, eh!

You could opt to see if anyone here or elsewhere would like to swap kits.

Paul,

Welcome to Canada. Nelson is a beautiful part of BC. I spent my summers as a kid at Sanca Beach on the East side just south of the Glass House (which is owned by a cousin of mine). You’ll have to check out the hot springs at Ainsworth.

Does Nelson have a LHS? If you ever come to Kelowna, let me know and I’ll buy you a pint and take you to the LHS we have here.

Bill

Swap out both boxes with two larger boxes. Move all the kits into one box. Then say “Look! One box is empty!”

Problem solved!

Welcome to Canada! If you do make it to the Okanagan valley I’m in Vernon which is just north of Kelowna and I’d be happy to give you a tour of our LHS as well. After you find that bigger box that is.

Hey Dave,

I’m working at Wayside Press in Vernon now. We should try to get together one day…

Bill

Bill, incoming PM.

My condolences.[:D] I’m kidding gents.[:)]

It really does stink when the depths of our addiction are discovered by those around us. I haven’t been allowed to buy a kit in nearly two months…but we’re also poor.[:)]

Hi guys,
thanks for the replies.

Bill & Dave: thanks for the welcomes and the info [:)] As far as I can tell Nelson & Castlegar don’t have a LHS between them. I have a list of online stores that I will be dealing with, shown below. If you know of any others, I’d be grateful if you would let me know. Do you ever use US sites, and if so, any import tax or other problems?

JWB: I like the idea! At first I thought she would spot that, but as I thought about it, it might just work in a while. If I complete a few, making it very obvious I am getting some done, especially the bigger boxes that will allow a repacking to take place. Then perhaps repack into a slightly larger box…hmm, it might just work [:D]

Brian: thanks for your condolences. Sucks not being able to buy kits eh? Oh well.

Paul

Paul!

You should be so lucky to have 70 kits to work on! I only have 7 and my wife will not allow me to buy more until I’ve built the 7 I have. Dude, I envy you!!! HOT Dang, I wish I had 70 kits to work on and then have my wife tell more NO MORE until you build what you got. [:O][:D]

Air Master

Welcome to Canada!

I’m from B.C. too, but moved to Calgary last year for work.

One of the shops on your list, Model Land, is close to me. It’s a cool store, tons of everything. Didn’t realize they did online orders.

Ordering from the US sites is possible, but then you get to deal with Canada Customs who will charge you up the wazoo for import taxes. I’ve pretty well stopped buying from the US because of that.

I’ve not yet ordered anything from Lucky models (http://www.luckymodel.com/) out of Hong Kong, but I’ve heard that somehow they escape the scrutiny of our illustrious government. Make sure you don’t type in lucky models (emphasis on the s) which offers deals on hot models, as opposed to hot deals on models, if you catch my drift. [:O]

And if you do get caught- blame me! Not sure that’ll do any good, but you never know! LOL

I realized I needed to move my stash to a less visible location. Now instead of being in some shelves in the kitchen, it’s in a deep, dark closet. [;)]

Good luck on setting in, Paul. I have my stash spread out over 75 milesin 3 buildings to confuse those who might be checking. My only master lists are handwritten in code and password protected.

Welcome Paul. If you ever get down to the south coast (Vancouver) drop a line and I’ll give you a tour of the LHS’s and what nots.

Same to you Dave[:D] Bill, once was nice, repeating will be better[tup][;)]

Welcome to Canada! Here in Ottawa, Ontario, we have four LHSs. One advantage I have…I work part-time for one, which is more R/C than plastic…but as the only plastic guy there, I have to do the orders from the distributors, which means I get my kits at wholesale, not retail. [tup]

I live in the US and never been to Canada but I hear it’s NICE up there, so [#welcome] Home

Bud

Bit off subject, but funny…

When I was in the Army, my team flew from here at Fort Bragg to Fort Drum NY to rehearse for operations in Haiti (back in '94). One evening we drove up the road into Canada- can’t recall the town but it was beautiful, right on what I think was the St. Lawrence river. (Someone said a military academy was there?) We were sitting at an outdoor cafe, and the guys I was with were flirting with the waitress. One of the guys on the team was sorta dense, and suddenly blurts out to the waitress “You speak English really well!” (We were not in the Frensh speaking part) She looks at him like he’s an idiot and says “What did you think we speak here?” He proudly answered “Canadian!, right?” We busted out laughing. His cool point count went waaaaaay down.
