Mottle on my Kate

Ive been trying different techniques to get the brown over green mottle on my 1/48 Kate and am not happy with any of my results[yuck]…anyone give me some pointers on how???[banghead]

Ive tried different settings on my airbrush and still not happy…too much splattter sometimes, or just too stark a spot/mottle…I have been working with a base of green backround then mottle over that. I think im going to try with a brown and come back over with the green more like stripes…leaving brown patches.

appreciate any help.

Thanks.

What type of paint are you using ? Generally for mottle, I thin the paint a bit more than normal, turn the psi setting down on my compressor, and work fairly close to the model surface. It takes some experimenting & practice to find what settings work best for you.

Here’s my mottled Zero, green over IJN grey. This was shot with a Badger 360 double action brush. The Tamiya IJN green was thinned to the consistency of 2% milk. The pressure was between 18 and 20 psi. Close to the work , with a double action brush, limiting paint flow you can acheive satisfacory results.

Good luck,[;)]

I agree with rick paint a little thinner than normal and low pressure.

Thanks for the tips…

Unfortunately my compressor does not have the option to lower the pressure…

I guess i can add a regulator or valve of some kind?? any hints?

i did have the paint thinned a bit more than usual…i was blaming that for the splattering…im using Tamiya colors.

Maybe its just practice…can i get a close up of that mottle steve???

Carlos,

I see we have conflicting advise here, which may be confusing to you. There is a good reason for it. Let’s start with my method. I have a regulated compressor and a double action airbrush. The double action feature allows me to crank up the pressure, and release very small amounts of paint into the high pressure airflow, which atomizes it and controls spatter. So I can get close to the work and get really good results when spraying my camo patterns.

Some modelers, prefer lower pressures. This is dependent upon thier equipment and thier skill level. When I had a Paasche single action airbrush, I too used lower pressure with some success, but have since went to double action and high pressure.

I figured it out that i need to upgrade my to a double action…just cant get the same control from my single action AB and go to a gravity top feed to be able to lower pressure…also need to work on technique…i am more used to the stripped mottle like FW 190 or on german armour than spots on a Kate…practice practice…

thanks
