What’s the most outrageous or bizarrest build you’ve seen or done yourself? Could have been based on something real, a prototype, or even something based in science fiction or fantasy.
At an IPMS show in Indy in 2001 a person brought in a diorama of the first plane crashing into the World Trade Towers. After a lot of heated arguments, it was removed.
The most outrageous build I have ever done is as stated by shermanfreak[#ditto] as it is the one I am working on now[^] It is a diorama of a real life situation and beleive me I could not have given myself a more demanding project[:(]
Like shermanfreak I will reserve my photos until I have finished with the proiject[:D]
A few years back, I navalized Heller 1/72 Gloster Javelin. I gave it folded wings, tail hook, RN markings and so forth.
I didn’t think it was terribly bizarre or outrageous myself, but lots of people did when I put it in the dislay case of my local hobby shop at the time. All sorts of arguments ensued:
Self Proclaimed Expert: “The Royal Navy didn’t use those!”
Joe Average Modeler: “I’m sure I’ve seen a picture of an RN Javelin somewhere”
SPE: “That’s ridiculous, they were to heavy and big to be navalized”
Me: “It’s just hypothetical guys, calm down”
JAM: “You mean you dreamed that up?!, Thats great!”
Me: “Thanks.”
SPE: “Its stupid, stick with reality!”
Me: “You stick with your reality and I’ll stick with mine buddy”
SPE: “Hmmph!”
After that, I just sat back and listened to the ongoing debate.
I still don’t think the build was so bizarre or outrageous, but the debate over it certainly was both
Ive seen a WW2 Puma armoured car done out with a spoiler andbig back wheels and a small front pair, painted out in JPS F1 racing decals (Black and Gold)
I didn’t mean it like that, I guess I’m just kinda impartial…I mean we are modeling history here for the most part…should we ban artists from painting their own renditions of it, or maybe writers from writing about it. I just view modeling as another art form, and I just don’t agree with most censureship. You don’t hear anyone complaining about modeling the fireman and such. I think it was just the guys way of expressing his feelings over the tragedy, and I understand it from that point, I don’t think he was trying to be sadistic about it.
I am currently finishing up Revell’s Wright Flyer in Blue Angels markings. Does that count? Had a second kit given to me so figured I’d have fun with it. Even got the pilot in a blue flight suit, instead of coat and tie.
i once did a P51 in USAF Thunderbirds markings (whats left of its bits in a spares box now). i have an airfix P51 hat i bought just for the Swedish decals (which were useless) that i am going to do something silly with, thinking P51 drone here, i also have an airfix fairey rotodyne that i am going to do as an RAF transport. i supose the strangest one has been a VEB Plasticart boeing 727 that i did as an ELINT type with larger radar dome and other stuff similar to the EC135’s that the USAF uses, painted in european 1 too.
i think a weird stuff group build is a good idea too
Hey Upnorth, would have loved to see that RN Javalin, great idea
Greg
Im new to modeling so it might not be that bizzare to you but here it goes. Yesterday i build a 1/72 willys jeep by academy. That thing is so small. It’s only about an inch long! Just seems wierd to me to have something so small.
I’d love to be able to show it to you all, but I didn’t have a good camera when I had the model and the model met an unfortunate( and irreparable) demise before I got my current camera that would be up to the task of getting a good picture of it.[:(]
Perhaps one day, I’ll give a navalized Javelin another go. Maybe a formation diorama of one with a Sea Vixen and Buccaneer.
I was also thinking if I found two, I could do an inflight diorama with one of them carrying a “buddy” refueling pod and the other taking on fuel from it.
I saw a picture of a “forced-perspective” shadowbox that showed a German fighter plane just after it had collided with an American bomber. The fighter has broken into pieces and is very bizarre and incredible looking. It was also very well done and realistic looking.
