Howdy, folks![:)]
Just as I was about to post some pix of my ol’ Tokyo Marui Type 90 MBT, I saw Bobby Wong’s post of his amazing 1/24 M1A2! Talk about your coincidences!
Since my meager efforts at detailing up the Type 90 pale in comparison to Bobby’s amazing works, I reconsidered posting…but heck, I already had 'em uploaded into Ron’s gallery, so I might as well parade 'em out…
(these links oughta be valid for a little while…when they X out, I’ll re-link)
It’s essentially the stock paint job, touched up in spots that were damaged in the detail-up process. I did this about 5 years ago, right before I got an airbrush, so I didn’t want to try tackling that camo pattern without one. That also means that I couldn’t fix the massive seams on the gun tube…and many other places. Oh well, next time! I do have the Marui Abrams waiting for a facelift!
New details on the Type 90 mainly included replacing grab handles and other tubular structures with brass rod, adding stray bits of PE here and there, adding antennae, adding a wire tow cable (which now acts as the actual RC antenna), doing a bit of work on the .50 cal, and adding brass mesh to the bustle rack. Then it was weathered up a bit.
I also used the separately sold single link tracks, which look really good.
Couldn’t think of any way to fix the way the tracks ride kinda off the sprockets, but what can ya do?
Read Bobby’s article again, I reckon! [:D]
Anyhoo, I hope ya’ll get a kick out this modern Japanese MBT. [:)]
Nope, those aren’t kill marks, but markings indicating that the tank is from the 5th Company (five stripes) of the 72nd Tank Regiment (cool cobra marking!).
Remember, modern Japanese tanks have never killed anything!
That looks real good Brian!! Don’t be so hard on your self [banghead] [;)]
The question I have is…can you do that good on a 1/16 Tiger…well? Can ya? Comon, show me, I dare ya! (Don’t make me bring out the big stick and have to triple dog dare ya [:p] )
I like the weathering you did on this one, I think it looks great bro!
Eric: Not the dreaded triple dog dare!!! Seems I have little choice now…nobody survives the TDD!
Gip: Yup, it’s prepainted, pre-assembled (you just have to snap on a few parts), and ready to drive. It’s an RC tank that fires plastic BBs 25 meters with an airgun system. Pretty cool. I got one (and the M1A2) mainly because they are darned good models, too! The biggest inaccuracy is the fat gun tubes, though. Way overscale, but I like the way that looks! KABOOOM!
Derek: Final drive is actually achieved via the track horns engaging holes in a drum within the sprocket, causing the “ridin’ high” effect. It would take a complete reworking of the sprockets to solve the problem, which again, was something I wasn’t prepared to do at the time.
The Abrams, by the way, doesn’t have that problem (well, not as bad, anyway).
To the rest of you nice people, thanks for the kind words!
It’s hard posting something you did years ago…hoping that you’ve improved since then!
HEh, heh, that’s right Brian, just go ahead and stick your tounge to the flag pole (or pull the Tiger outa the box in your case!), there’s no backing down from this one!!! [:-,] [(-D]
Thanks, folks!
I think I actually did a better job of taking the pix than fixing that “toy” up!
Frosty-chan, yup, they’ve all had a go at the various Kaiju we have roaming around here in Japan, but as the film record attests, the poor tanks always get stomped with the Kaiju no worse for the wear! And the Type 90 has been featured prominantly in many recent Kaiju flix, too. Not only that, Toho uses the very same Tokyo Marui Type 90 RC model that you see in this post for their miniature work. The Godzilla suit is 1/24 (or 1/25) scale, after all.
And that’s today’s Japanese Monster Flick Trivia, brought to you by J-Hulk!
