Thanks everyone for your help in helping me understand aftermarket accessories.
now i got a few more questions, predominatly, what is a “group build”? just that where everyone gets together on a certain subject and builds from there? why is there so many of them? it seems like constantly someone is posting them. is there awards? prizes? or just simple fun and gratification?
does anyone have the right to post and make the rules on it (scale, make, ect) or is there a general guidline?
i’ve been modeling for a few years now, but only lately am i trying to get deeper into it and need your help, so THANKS!
A group build is just that, a group of people doing a common theme. I’m in the Monogram group build and the subject is any Monogram kit including the ones since Revell merged with them. Usually they are restricted to one type and scale. There have been some good GB out there and there have been some that were so so. It helps working on one subject because if you get stuck with something, some one is there to help because they are doing the same thing.
let me add a little to what kevin has already stated. the group builds are rewarding in that by working on the same subject or even just the working in a group environment allows us to learn and share what information we have. it is also a great way to pick up things. learning from some of the masters around here can only help us. i am in several builds. the plane/backward, the nmf (a/c), the pearl harbor (havent finished it yet), the monogram build, the dday build. there is some talk of a few others coming up that i am interested in also.
i would encourage all to join them and enjoy yourself. you can really get to know alot the other members that way.
Go ahead and start one. I just tried to start one but first I wanted to test the waters so to speak. This gives me an idea whether or not there’s enough interest.
aerialresponder you build at your pace, example is my pearl harbor project, post them when you get done. if the deadline passes and you are not done no one will come down on you. after all this is a hobby. we are members of this community because we want to associate with others with the same passion. we all look forward to completed builds. the goal is to learn and improve, some like me have a lot to learn and much to improve. the deadlines that are posted are general guidelines for starting and ending but they are never set in stone. and there are no hobby police that enforce them. however if a build begins a certain day and you finish before that day you may ruffle some feathers.
the most important thing to remember is that you are the one putting up the money for the kit and supplies and the time involved in building. if you choose to join a build and cannot complete in the alloted time you will still be valued as a member of the family.

these are the kinds of questions I myself mean to ask. it’s good to see how quickly we get answers from our peers. group builds sound like fun and challenging, not to mention the shared insight gained by all working as a group. i like the concept. semper fi, mike
im debating starting one, there are a few selected ones i’ve noticed very little of on sights like ARC and would like to see more. is it a general rule of thumb that if you see very little reviews to a certain maker/ or airplane, many wont want to join in?
It does make sense, but no, out of the ordinary subjects can attract a lot of attention too. Personally I’m in the Prototypes GB at the moment, and we build all kinds of strange kits you don’t often see hitting the headlines. In fact, that’s part of the fun! Just go ahead and tell us what you’re thinking of. You might be surprised at the responce you get (or not, but try anyway [swg]).
