Well, I’ve managed to get a little more work done on my Maritime projects in between all the building going on at the Aircraft Factory .
I finally got all the decks on the Titanic, and finished putting all the little deck details in place.
I’m going to finish painting the lifeboats before I put them on, and then I can get the stacks built and mounted.
I also put in some work on my Russian Kalininn Battlecruiser. I got the bridge built up here:
The three stripes of blue across the top of the middle are my testing of a couple of other colors to see which one more closely matches the color I’m using now. The main color is Warbirds Blue-Grey, and I’m running low. I doubt I’ll have enough to finish the ship so I’ll have to mix some other colors together to match it.
This is the main ‘Mack’ and the rear part of the main superstructure:
Here is everything test-fit together. Note the rear part of the superstructure is on backwards:
Now here is the superstructure rising up from the main deck:
Now she’s starting to look like a ship! Almost three down, one to go!
Thanks for stopping in and enjoy the Barbeque![C=:-)]
Gee, I must not be doing so well here. [V][:(] 20 views and no replies! [B)] That’s the most I’ve seen without a response.
I’m trying my best with the stuff I have, and I can’t afford the aftermarket stuff all of you are able to get, so I have no choice in building OOB. I don’t know whether to apologize or just stop posting in the ships forum.
I do have to say, I love all of your work here and wish I could do as well You all are the most incredible ship builders I’ve seen!
I’m generally not a ship modeler, but enjoy looking through the builds, as I’m in the process of one of the old Revell Titanics also… making it for my daughter’s graduation.
Also, on the Kalininn… that is a resin kit, no? I think you’re doing a fine job… if yours are anything like mine, they’re not much to look at while in the process of being built ,(partial paint, filler, sanding dust, etc) but look just fine when we’re ready to put them under glass. I certainly enjoyed your progress pictures! [:)]
Thanks Oldhooker! It’s great to know that you enjoy my pics. Actually, the Kalininn is an injection molded kit from Trumpeter in 1/700 scale. It’s got a ton of parts! I’ll keep going on my progress and hopefully get these done soon. Good luck on your Titanic!
Your stuff looks ok to me. Why apologize because you can’t afford a PE set or aftermarket kit that costs 2 or 3 times what the base kit costs? I struggle with that too and it’s one of the things that drove me out of the hobby a few years ago. Not real enough. Keep building ships if you enjoy it. I don’t usually look at surface craft because I build very few if any, but I’ll pay a little more attention from now on.
They look great to me. I also have a Titanic kit in the stash, but I’m alittly spooked from pulling out and starting it. Mine is the old Minicraft one [:(]
I look forward to see it completed.
How well does the Revell Titanic go together and what scale is it?
Hey Duke-
So not feel sorry that your budget cannot afford any pe. I’ve been working on one kit since before my oldest daughter was born. I cannot afford to go and buy a piece of sheet brass or aluminium to finish scratch building and aircraft crain. My daughter is now turning 3 yrs old in one week. Keep in mind that some day you’ll be able to afford it, just like I know that some day I’ll be able to some day get that piece of brass to finish that kit. So until then
Thanks for the words guys, I appreciate them. I’ll keep building, because I love ships!I ahve more than 290 built already.
Mike, what size and thickness of brass do you need to build that crane? I actually have a sheet of brass sitting around that I doubt I’ll use. I don’t know where it is at the moment, but I believe it is about 6x8 inches in size and quite thin. I’ll see what I can do to find it again and give you more specific specs. If it’ll fit what you need, it’s yours if you want it.
Lon, the Revell one is box scale, which comes out to 1/542 scale and goes together pretty well. You just have to watch out when putting the top deck on. For some reason, my bridge wings don’t match up so with the main deck. It’s a bit of a bother, but my brother won’t notice the difference, so I don;t worry about it. Also, the bridge facing is a bit too tall, I had to shave it to get it to fit right. The detail is okay, but some parts need a bit of cleanup. Also, the ‘ratlines’ on the masts were molded pretty thiock. I solved that problem the first time by cutting them from the sprue, turning them over and running an X-acto blade across the back at a 90 degree angle to the part. That shaves a little plastic at a time off the part, (and produces a wicked ‘screeing’ sound that drives the cat nuts!) I keep going until I can see the molding that is on the other side. They come out real thin that way. Someone actually thought I’d replaced them with real thread! All in all, I’d say the Revell kit is a pretty easy kit to build. The longest time I spent on it was the painting. Hope this helps.
hey duke, don’t worry about PE stuff i cant afford it myself. perhaps you would like to try scratch building the details that aren’t provided in the kit. but i think your ships look great keep up the good work!
P.S. at first glance i thought your titanic was the box painting good job on the finish.
Thanks micmoe! Scratchbuilding is another toughie for me! I enjoy building OOB, and I know my ships won’t win any contests, but as long as they look good to me, I’m happy.
