After I thought I had read the last word on coloring and markings for the panzers that fought at Kharkov in Feb/mar of 1943, Echelon decals comes out w/ a sheet of decals and a color guide for several Mk IV’s of the 1st SS Panzergrenadier Division during the battle. Now, they claim to be right about the base color of the tanks, turret numbers and divisional insignia and crosses!!! They contend that the Mk IV’s were in panzer grey w/ turret numbers that were only in white outline, and then whitewashed, leaving neat panzer grey numbers…they concede that some of the Mk IV’s might have been in dark yellow as well…

I know that a few of us have built the DML Mk IV “Kharkov Edition” recently and thought you might be interested in this:

…for years it was widely believed that the tanks were panzer grey, but recently thought to be proven that the Mk IV’s wee indeed in dark yellow, and now we are back at panzer grey!!! I’m not sure I buy that they were in base panzer grey…I might be more convinced of a different color of turret number, but I suppose the debate will rage on…I do believe that the Mk III’s were in base panzer grey, however…what do you think?

I thought they were all painted like this:

Forgive my naiveity, but I thought that dunkelgelb became standard in Feb of 43? The key word being standard. So it’s possible that some came out before that date? Was Africa a deciding factor? I don’t know.

I believe the decal makers have theorized that the Division took its vehicles that were issued to it while in occupied France w/ them to Russia…these vehicles were issued to them in panzer grey before the order of '43…
