More color questions for 1942 Enterprise

Hi again. Work is pregressing smoothly on the trumpeter Enterprise conversion but needed some help nailing down a few more details. does anyone know what the Hanger deck’s base color was? Also I can’t find any reference material on what deck lines where on the Enterprise in June '42, and what color they would be.

From what I can gather, Enterprise’s hangard deck was 5-D dark gray, and her bulkheads were 5-L light gray. Her flight deck lines were either a light gray or white.

I’ve no references to her having yellow lines on her deck early on in the war.

I’ve got a photo or 2 that show the hanger deck bulkheads and overhead (ceiling) as being White.

Thanks for the info Jeff! Once again you are in for the rescue! Painting the interior hanger is one of my next steps.

Tim,

5-L is a very light grey, close to white. It would be impossible to tell in B&W photos. Have to remember that white was not a large stock color in the USN, 5-D and 5-L were premixed colors, and when they were discontinued for exterior camo uses in December of 1941 (Measure 1), they no doubt had a surplus.

Either way, 5-L or white, I seriously doubt anyone would be able to second guess you, because the two guys with opposite opinions will off arguing in the corner about it!

Jeff, Your right about the off in the corner bit. I seen a color photo in one of my books of maint being done on a Wildcat (I think?) in a hanger bay, I just can’t find it when I want it. I have several colors photo’s of Flight Decks circa 1943-44, and there is no blue stain left. Looks wood color. I did find a color of a modern Hanger Bay and It’s White. I’ll keep looking. I’ve bought a ton of books on e-bay for reference in the last month and now I have to look thru them all. [banghead][banghead][banghead][censored]
