Monogram/Revell 1/32nd F3F-3

I’m starting to build a 1/32nd Grumman F3F-3 by Revell (Gr). I have noticed that the wing span is short (by approx. 1.5 in.) for the -3 (or -2 for that matter) aircraft. More like the F3F-1 or the Williams aircraft. The span on the -2 and -3 planes was 32 ft.

Has anyone else noticed and rectified this issue? Thanks.

Hans von Hammer would probably know.

That kit was also issued with William’s markings, perhaps that was the original intent. I had not paid any attention to the wingspan. You may be the first to notice!

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I would be astonished to know I was the first to notice this. I can live with the short coming I guess. The only way I could see to make the correction was to find a second kit and cut and splice a couple of wing sections to both the upper and lower wing. Hate to destroy a second kit to do that though.

The wing is as for the Gulfhawk and F2F, not the F3F. It does need to have the wingspan increased for any variant of the F3F. Lone Star Models made a resin wing, or the wing can be easily modified. The wingspan on the F3F upper wing should be 32" 0".

OOps…[:(DD]…[:D]

A couple of you are confusing the Revell 1/32 F4F WIldcat (the link that was provided) with the Monogram 1/32 F3F. The F3F (biplane) is the kit that is being asked about.

That’s the only 1/32 scale kit of Monogram’s I never built… But I can say that things like that don’t bother me at all… Contest Judges don’t walk around with tape measures and scale drawings, so it’s not an issue with me anyway…

There’s a few Mongram kits of it still avaiable, both the F3F and the Gulfhawk, but they’re getting collector rather than builder prices for them, so I’m still waitng…

Thanks Bronto. Yeah, I knew it was for a F2F (28.5 Ft) not a F3F, my thumbs are to big. I did not know, however, that there was an after market wing had been made for this issue. Thanks.

I will continue the build with the kit wings, assuming I can’t find a Lone Star replacement. Thanks again to all for the great replies.

Thought I’d make a quick UD on this thread. I received the LONE STAR replacement 1/32nd wings a few days ago for the F3F-3 and can report that the ARE worth the money. Beautifully cast! I’ll post some pictures when I’m done. I would have got the cockpit casting as well but I scratch built the entire area.

There was someone else on here a few weeks ago asking the same question. I remember this because I thought he was talking about a wildcat and was quickly corrected…lol. Look around page ten in this forum…it`s there!
