I remember when Kinchloe shut down. When we were to transition from the 106 to the F-15 our new commander came in from the 87th FIS.
Here’s some shots of the tree at Ellsworth in 1971:

The reventments were made of the same material as some of the buildings on the bases which were coorugated steel filled with sand.
FeldMarSchall,
Sorry to take so long to get back to you; life kinda got in the way.
I’ll be posting some of the detail shots I have soon (as soon as I find the rest!) of both the D and the X-15 A model carrier at the Pima Air Museum.
As for the future B-52 models, I’m planning on doing an entire interior to include a proper bombbay; having both radomes off and all eight engines gone. Ought to be impressive for sheer size alone, and the dull weathered camo or possibly heavily oxidized NMF should look impressive.
Hay,
Sorry I haven’t been on here for a while, the nice weather had pulled me away from my work bench and, on to my road bike. But I’ve come back and started back up again my models. I pulled the 52’s boxes out and got to some work mid day. Before that I did take some time to clean off my finished models. (Keeping the dust off and keeping them looking clean)
EC-130CrewChief, you might have to post those pictures again on here, if you have. Would love to see them. That would be pretty awesome to see your 52 project finished like that.
(All I need to do is get my brother working on his 52, hes doing the SAC White and Aluminum NASA finish)
(My SR-71 1/48)
(My B-29 1/48)
FeldMarSchall, your B-29 turned out great! Looks like you have a gigantic workbench(room!!)
Thanks raider83, that was my first real big bird I worked on. I did make mistakes, but overall I think It looks good. And yes it did fit on my work bench, the wind tips were just barely on the table. I will have to make another one, it was alot fun to put the large bird together. I leared alot from that one. Oh and alot of paint!
Ikar01, hope you don’t mind put I took your pictures and ran them though photoshop. I cleaned them up with auto levels to take the discolor out.
No problem! That made a big difference. Wish I could do that.
Ikar01, I was thinking about those pictures and if photoshop would help.
I do have a question about the D model, were the engine attaches to the wing, should I fill in the gap around were it hangs on the wing?
And should the same thing be done for the pod that holds the bombs on the wing, theres a gap towards the front should that be filled in to?
Oh and how would you line up the two fuselages together? The first one I glued together and the seems didn’t line up at all. Thats the only main problem I have.
Ikar01, I tounched up and filterd some more of your pictures.
Can anyone confirm what type of zinc chromate is used on the D-model? When I built my Monogram BUFF, I wasn’t aware that there were two different zinc chromates, yellow and green. I ended up using green zinc chromate. It looks great, but if it’s supposed to be yellow, I may have to rebuild it…
In all my experiances it was green …Harv
For mine I used yellow for one, and green for the other.
Today I did some more work, touch on more of the open engine area. And did come measuring for a rough diorama, I’m really thinking about making one of the cell blocks the B-52’s were parked in (Think thats what there called) I might also use the Hasegawa 1/72 crew sets. More details later.
(Not glued together)
(My old B-52 from years ago, measuring how big to make the diorama)
Oh and I’m thinking about starting up a Big Birds Group Build, if anyone’s interested, and would like to help get it started, let me now.
Well I did some more work on D models, the one from leaving it alone on top of boxs, had let the cockpit platform get lose inside. There wasn’t anyway to glue it back in, other than cutting the fuselage open. At first I was cutting it with just my hobby knife, then realizing just hold the section up to my lamp(100W), and that heated up that section to the point were the glue gets all soft, then you can get it apart better. Now just got to put somthing in there to hold up the cockpit better, oh and one of the pilots are missing to. The man hunt is on for him still.
For the H model, I was going to make it as “In Flight” display, but now I’m thinking about adding the landing gear, so it can sit on the table with the rest of them.
My brother doesn’t seem to want to get it and gear, and put his together. So I told him I could put it together for him, then he could put the decals on or somthing like that. He wants his done in the bare aluminium, and flash white under side.
I do have a question about were is there extra, and different decals for the Stratofortress?
I’ve been taking my time on these birds, so progress has been slow. These model are truly alot of work.
I would be VERY up for a Big Birds GB! I have a 1/72 B-17F / 1/72 B-52G / 1/72 Avro Lancaster and a 1/72 DC-130 … just a few, lol.
Just make it a little later in the year. I’m in the 251 GB that starts in October and 2 big GB’s at once would be hell, lol.
Having fun watching the progress in this so I know what to look for when I start mine up.
Josh
Yeah I was thinking about doing that GB later in the year, good luck will all those big birds [;)]
I really can’t wait till these four 52’s get done, and I take a group photo with them! If I can I might glue on the other side’s wing on both of them today. On the third 52, I was thinking of just going with tamyia gloss aluminium spray paint, my B-29 cloth came out good with that.
The big dog is the B-36, which IMHO is a well designed model. It has to be the RB-36d on account of how the bomb bays are set up. Otherwise too many mods, although there are decals for bombers.
The Airfix Vulcan is a good entry also, the Hasegawa B-47, the AMT XB-35/47, all in 1/72.
Well I’ve gotten back in working on my 52’s, I have four of them but one I’ve decided to hold off till a later time to finish it. The two D models have there wings on, H model does to, only thing missing is one of the fuel tanks.
When I test fitted the two to see if they sit right, the one with yellow zinc chromate sits fine, the left tip gear if off the ground, the right one is just bearly touching the ground. The last time I did the same to the green zinc chromate, the tip gears lifted the back of the plane up. When I do another test fit to it, I’ll see if thats still a problem.
(Makes it easy to fill and sand)
Looks like an ORI on boxes! I was at the Travis AFB air show last Sunday. I was kind of dissapointed, though. Not much in the way of “war” birds. But did get lots of Buff pics. I know several of you are building them, so I thought you could use them. There are a bunch. Hope you enjoy them…Harv
