Monogram B-36 and F-100D Questions

Happy New Year to all. A few questions I hope some of you can answer…

  1. If you’ve built the Monogram 1/72 B-36, how did you paint the black walkways? I don’t think my normal technique of masking with Scotch tape is going to work well on silver paint!! If it helps any, I simply use Testors metallic silver or chrome spray paint for natural metal aircraft. I don’t have the patience for all that other stuff (buffing, etc.).

  2. I want to build a Vietnam-era camouflaged F-100D. The only decals I can find for such a bird are the kit decals, which are the thick and glossy kind. I’ve heard these described as “unusable”. Is that because they don’t adhere well? Too glossy for a flat finish? Is there a special technique I should use to get these decals to work well?

Boy-oh-boy, no easy way to do B-36 walkways. If I had to do the job, I’d cut miles of thin stripe from black decal stock and prepare for a long tedious job. Especially around all those engine nacelles.

If you can track down the Expert’s Choice/Bare Metal F-100D decal sheet, (now OOP, sad to say) you’ll be one happy camper. Five different Vietnam warriors. Excellent quality. Those old Monogram decals are not worth the bother. Good templates for replacements.

Hello! I’m afraid I won’t be of much assistance on the F-100 question but I can tell you how I did all the walkways on my B-36 (I’m working on my 3rd one right now). The last one I built I used extremely thin pinstriping tape which I found in the R/C car section at HobbyTown. Right off the top of my head I don’t remember the width of it but, after looking at a ruler here at work, it might have been 1/16" wide. It stuck very nicely and, best of all, I was able to handle all those curved walkways around those engines with out any problems. It was truly a godsend.

Hope this has helped,

Eric

I have no idea how much this will help, but see if there’s some way to get your hands on a decal sheet from the Revell Germany re-issue of the kit. An almost full set of walkway stripes are provided (through some screw up I think you come up about an inch short in one spot- no biggie). Just my two cents.

Aagranata;

The B-36 walk ways: what I’ve done is paint the wings Flat Black, the masked the strips then painted the silver over the black then pulled the mask on wella walk way lines,

The F-100: super scale has some SEA schemes but I don’t know if they are in production but try EvilBay, and/or Squadron or Great Models sites

Check out the photos of the B-32 Dominator I made. I used Nensco border tape to make the walkways. It’s a very fine line black tape. It is made in several widths. They should have one for the width you need.The company does have a website.

I just took a trip over to www.flightdecs.ca and they have that sheet listed as “soon to come” so maybe a reissue is expected. It seems the last update to the flightdecs site was September of 2006 so current enough to be worth contacting them about its availability.

Thanks for all the tips, guys. For the B-36, I think I’m gonna’ try the pinstriping tape that was mentioned above.

As for the F-100, I don’t know…
