Monogram 1/48 Devastator & Airacobra

Hi All,

I have been trying to locate and purchase the above named kits…well, from a kit dealer not from e-bay or an antique shop.

I realize they are probably out of production, but does anyone know of a dealer that might have these kits at regular market prices? I have been away from the hobby for a lot of years and am kind of out-of-touch.

Researched about a dozen sites from a google list…but can’t find these particular kits anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Try 3Guyz here in Buffalo:

I know that I’ve see several of each on their shelves.

Thank you for that reply…I will check that

Nam

The TBD was reissued within the past 5 or 6 years or so, and once more about 5 years before that, so it should not be too hard to find. The P-39 has been out of production for quite awhile longer, but still pop up fairly often at consignment shelves in hobby shops. You may want to check “Rare Plane Detective” (I believe he has a web site) for either one. I dont know if they have any kit collector/swap meets near you, but they are always good for finding old Monogram kits. If all those fail, you can keep your fingers crossed that Revell will reissue them soon as they seem to be doing currently with many of the other old Monogram kits (F4U-4, Me-262, JU-87D, SBD).

I would have to agree w/ Justen and check w/ 3Guyz… If not I may have a 39 that I could possibly part with…

Good hunting…

Flaps up,

Mike

Thank you again everyone. Just got home and will follow up all these leads.

Thanks again

Nam

Gentlemen…I have tried the phone # above…tried every conceivable spelling of 3Guyz…w/ 411 and google

…and nothing gets me thru to them.

Do you have any help?

Here is my Monogram Devastaor

Nice build Philo! I picked up one of these kits a while back on Ebay which is signed by Ensign George Gay of VT-8.

Wow!most impressive!Wasn’t George gay the only surviving member of Torpedo squadron 8 at Midway? Thanks for the compliment!

Correct! He was the sole survivor of VT-8 at Midway. And you’re welcome! How did you deal with the seam on the main wing? I looked at the kit, and the saem looks like it will be quite prominent and it passes right through all of the corrugations. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated! [tup]

To deal with that seam,I applied the putty vertically between each corrugation in the wing. When the putty was dry,I wrapped the sandpaper around my round needle file and again sanded each individual corrugation. This method is time[-consuming but was the only method I could think of.

Thanks Philo, that’s a good tip!

Nam- Sorry my friend, didn’t mean to hi-jack your thread! [XX]

George Gay was the only survivor off the Torpedo 8 element launched off of the Hornet at Midway. There was also the Midway Detachment of VT-8, equipped with TBFs. 5 of 6 shot down, one heavily shot up TBF (8T1) limped back to Midway with a dead turret gunner and wounded pilot and radioman.

I’ve seen both on Ebay just recently. Prices weren’t too bad.

Very fitting in this Xmas season…

I got a PM from someone we all know…and we have worked it out where I will buy one each of the Thread Planes from him. Very Gracious…Indeed!

Very nice work Philo!..and like hint about the wing fold!

Can’t really tell you how happy I am to be able to see these kits again.

…and Frank…you hijack whatever you wish![oX)][#toast][#toast]…and one for DesertRat[#toast]

…you guys may grin…but as a kid, I read George Gay’s account of his Midway experience…and it was a major factor in my joining the Navy

So here’s one for George…and one for my kit benefactor![#toast]…and[#toast]

Thanks, Nam

Thanks! This thread is very cool!Always loved the Monogram Devastaor ever since i first built it in the '70s as a kid!The one in the pic with BMF finish was built about 4 years ago I got it for 10 bucks at Model Expo.com

Nice to see any fan of golden age/early WWII birds! I will check the link you listed.

Though honestly…I have been to dozens of online hobby places and the kits I started this thread about…well, they have none…or they tell you they have them…then mail you a couple days later and tell you…out of stock…don’t know when we will have them.

I’m not ranting…I’ve learned that this is common.

Not being a ‘collector’…I tend to avoid e-bay…I like to have a stash. But you can bet that if I see a kit somewhere…and I know someone here is really wanting it…I’ll buy the son-of-a-gun, and they can have it. Cost.

This is a great group of people!

Sorry…now I must go drink…hafta work tomorrow![#toast]
