Modeling for "Funsies"

After spending weeks and months accurizing all those kits on your workbench, have you ever given in to the urge (or even had the urge) to take a kit and glue and simply slap it together like you did when you were a just a kid? (Some of you still are, so this question doesn’t apply to you[:D]).

I did. I’m primarily an armor modeler, but I got the urge, grabbed an old Monogram F-something-or-other airplane, cut everything from the sprue and just glued it all together. Took me about an hour to finish it. Looked pretty bad. Didn’t care. Fortunately, I was able to give it to my son, and he loved playing with it. But I found it almost cathartic in a strange sort of way: no pressure to fill seams, sand mold marks, or paint it just so. Just pure, unadulterated, living-in-the-past kind of fun.

Of course, with the price of kits being what they are now, I don’t do this regularly.

What about you[?] Ever built one just for the “fun” of it[?]

Am I insane, psychotic, neurotic, or just crazy?

Shock, horror and little fishes, man!! You’ve offended my delicate sensibilities!! Make a kit “for fun”??? What’s the world coming to?
Actually, haven’t done that in years…sounds like a good idea.
What I thought about the other day is getting one of those “snap-tite” kits and sitting down with my 11 year old daughter and see if I can “infect” her with the modelling bug.

I think this is what I’m going to have to do to get over this “block” I’ve been having. I’ve got my work area all set up, a shelf full of kits and yet I can’t get in the groove and build. I’ve got a couple kits that I started before I moved last year, and I feel obligated to finish them, but they just don’t hold my interest right now. I think I’m just going to grab one of the other kits and start in on it. Maybe that will get me going again. What do you all think?

These are what the Mad “theme” days are all about…24 hours to build, paint, finish. Makes for some interesting circumstances, even as a spectator. [tup]

Most of the kits that I’ve got in my current stash would make very expensive cathartic experiences though, would have to choose a special subject to throw together for it not to be too painful in the process. [:D]

to me this sounds like a good idea for a group build in the future. slap together build. no filler, no pe, no paint, no resin. just to slap it together. for fun.

I am with you guys wholeheartedly on this… I feel so obligated to try to ‘perfect’ my projects that I have a hard time finishing what I have started or I leave it alone altogether.I need to get out of that rut so maybe something like this will help.
