Has anyone experienced having their unbuilt model collection stolen? I have. When I was living in San Diego, my storage locker was broken into and evey single kit and modeling tool I had was taken. I often wonder why anyone would want the stuff I had. Obviously there was resale value for the unbuilt kits but the thieves also took my partially built stuff too. Also my painting carrier with all my good paints and brushes. Lots of my reference material was taken too. I wonder if I’ll see any of my loss at any flea market or swap meets. Or advertise on craiglist or Ebay? If anyone sees a old Lifelike 1/40th scale 90mm antiaircaraft gun kit thats been partially built or finished, it’s probably mine. I guess what I’m trying to say is that, even when you, as a modeller, think your hobby is not worth much, maybe it’s worth more than you know. So safe guard your “valuables”.
Sad to here that, I lost my collection to a theft in the 80’s and it sucks ,lots of out of production goodies lost.

Never heard of that before, but I have heard of collections being lost to fire. Sorry to hear it.
Hammer had an incident last year (?) after evacuating the flood-zone around his place. I just don’t understand people sometimes.

I have had individual built items taken but never the stash… I refuse to put it in one of those places in spite of what the spousal unit wants. I can say that my cop background and having been on numerous burglar reports from public storage facilites is a great argument that she has yet to counter…[;)]
Yep, Hammer got cleaned out when his building was evacuated due to flooding. (And I thought you guys SHOT looters over there…)

Modelers have lost their stashes and collections for a variety of reasons. That’s why I encourage everyone to have some sort of insurance to cover them in case of loss whether it be from theft, flood, fire or other disaster.
For those who rent, annual rental insurance is priced in many cases about the same as a new Trumpeter release.
Even those who are in transition can have their property covered while in a storage locker. Though I have never stored my stash in such a location I have had to store some rather expensive equipment with would make any thieves mouths water. I picked a facility with good security, restricted access and I used a commercial grade high security padlock on the door.
Though insurance my never be able to completely replace those rare kits, having the piece of mind that you can get something for them is better than getting nothing at all. Many believe it will never happen to them so they forgo getting insurance, then the day comes. Something happens and they have zero.
pssst… ditto on Hawkeye’s comments, ceptin the exspensive equipment part… but as my DAY job, I sell in insurance and Renter’s Ins is very reasonable…
as a further suggestion… Make a list of your stash, take some pics, and store this in a seperate location, this is so you can show the Adjustor what you had if its stolen, lost, or burned. Also, don’t forget the deductible. If you have a high deductible, it might not be worth it if your stash is stolen( if thats the only thing)
The more info you have on your stash, the better off you’ll be if you have a claim…
