On e-bay, item 260160910886, described as clipper ship"Caliph". Plans shown are the Modelcraft plans for that ship, but the accompanying photos are definitely of an armed vessel, nothing like a clipper. Can anyone help with an ID, even tentative, of the photos. I mailed the seller, but he doesn’t know, and is obviously not ‘into’ ships.
The model ship has a definite look of a small armed vessel of the late eighteenth century something like HMS Bounty perhaps; there are similarities in the stern and qtr galleries and the general shape including the figurehead.
I don’t think the seller is making a link between the model and the plans he is providing, they bear no relationship to each other.
My initial thought was the ‘Bounty’, but hasn’t the model got too many guns?
The Bounty did have less guns, generically the model could I suppose be classed as a small frigate or sloop but that is as far as I can guess, its relationship to any real ship is tenuous.
It is what I would call a ‘furniture’ model, being quite crude in parts but having a certain curio appeal, but not what could be classed as a serious scale model.
if you like it - go for it; whether its worth a starting bid of £99 I don’t know
I wasn’t intending to buy the model, the reference came up as the result of my searches for Modelcraft plans. I already have those for the Caliph, but let the buyer know the photos didn’t match. His reply was that the plans and photos had come together so he assumed they were partners, and could I offer information on the model shown. I’ve basically suggested what we’ve discussed here.
Thanks for the input.
