People who teach art or judge art contests are people who failed to make a real go of art. I have worked as an artist for 28 years now (although a “commercial” artist) and I don’t give a rat’s tail end about contests or judges or teachers-I just wanna keep making good money. Modeling is a skill but all the training and equipment doesn’t guarantee a good built-that’s where the “art” sneaks in.
BUILD ON!
I feel that whilst model building is an art requiring the same levels of talent and skill as any other art, the finished model is not, of itself, a piece of “art” in the same way as a painting or sculpture. I suppose logically there is no reason why this should be so, but as has already been pointed out, art is always a subjective thing. One mans art is another mans rubbish.
If NASCAR can be a “sport” then model building can be an “art”. I don’t see how you can say otherwise. You paint it using your own unique techniques and using your own interpretation of how things look. You may build a diorama as well. Will someone say this amount of creativity is not art? You pour your own thoughts and passions into it always striving to be better like any fine painter or dancer. You tell a story with it and hope it touches someone else in their own personal way.
By the way, for everyone’s information, NASCAR is, indeed, not a sport.

Well said, brave man.
Unfortunately, I got my degree in art. At the time it was the only thing I could major in and still graduate in 4 years. I got the same excrement from my art professors. Modelling isn’t art. Photography isn’t art. Drawing or painting something that actually looks like what it is is only illustration and it isn’t art. Seemed like they weren’t willing to consider something art unless it assaulted the senses, beliefs or good taste.
My advice is keep building your models. If it gives you a medium for expressing yourself and your creativity, then it’s art. Pure and simple.
