Model Boneyard...

There comes a time when a modeler has to decide which builds to keep and which to get rid of. Sometimes that comes in the form of a major event, like moving or the Mrs. saying things have to be redecorated. How do you dispose of your works once the decision has been made? Mine have usually gone up in a “blaze” of glory, or with a “bang”.[:D]

I usually remove ordnance, wheels, struts or anything that I think might come in handy “from the parts box” and then put the rest in the trash can. My wife doesn’t let me play with things that go “whoosh” or “bang.” [alien]

I’ve only had a couple models that I have retired to my boneyard…hate to think I’d have to do away with any more of them. An old F-14 Tomcat is now a test-bed for exotic paint schemes (for testing my airbrush), and an old B-25 that is laying in pieces may possibly be ressurected as a Marine PBY-1J. I guess my problem is that I throw nothing away, lol.

I have huge model boneyard. When I was a kid, I never painted my models (didn’t we all) but I still have all these unpainted models ( 125+) I use them for spare parts and what-if projects.
I have never thrown a finished model (in this case beeing defined as painted and decalled) away. I like to see the progress I have made: from brush painting to airbrushing, from factory fresh to weatherd. And more importantly beeing able to show this progress to visitors.

Most of my Kits end up on the boneyard., unless they are reasigned to be used as testbeds for new techniques.

It used to be that the kits I could no longer keep were sent off to the test range where they were used as targets for kinetic weapons (BBs) or explosives (firecrackers). One of the nice things about living on a farm. Now, with my young children, I just strip useful parts off and dump the rest. Not as satisfying as the old method, but safer for all concerned. I may keep one or two during the next purge to use as testbeds for paint and weathering, that seems like a good idea.

I have most of my builds intact. Some are on display at the LHS, some I build for freinds or Vets, and a few I sell if the right buyer/offer comes along.

Regards, Rick

Looks like a lot of us use the “blaze of glory” or the trash as a last resort. I also strip what I can for the spares box and then get rid of the rest (as described before), but I usually try and keep the models for as long as I can. Like I said, it’s a last resort when all other options are out. Besides, I feel better when I’m doing the “ridding” vice someone else. I was at the creation, I should be there at the end.
