Misty FAC F-100F 1/72 Italeri

I have ordered the 1/72 Italeri F-100F and will use my Caracal Decals, F-100 In Vietnam, for a Misty FAC plane. I read the book Bury Us Upside Down about the MISTY unit a few years ago…EXCELLENT read! The kit should be here by Saturday with any luck.

The kit arrived today. Off to wash the sprues then start with the cockpit assembly.

Here’s an image of the F-100F I am modeling, HS-222, Protestors Protector, firing off a “white phosphorus” rocket.

I have a start. The seats are painted and now to add belts and harnesses. Cockpit next. No extras on this build with the exception of aftermarket decals and two 7 shot rocket pods.

Cockpit is almost done. I am not impressed with the decal harnesses, I usually make ones from Tamiya tape, thought I’d try these.

Cockpit glued in to right side of fuselage. Now to add 20 grams of weight then close up fuselage halves.

You’ve got a great start!!

21 grams of weight in the nose, fuselage halves closed up.

Started work on the wings.

I think there is a need for a new mold F-100F. The Italeri kit is getting long in the tooth.

Canopy, wings and nose are all on. More putty, more sanding, more fun.

Looking at your progress and the sprues I have to wonder if its a rebox of the older Hasegawa/Minicraft kit. The parts look very similar.

The old Hasegawa kit it is NOT! It seems to be a copy of the ESCI-AMT kit but then again it’s NOT! It’s just the old Italeri kit that needs to be put to bed. LOL  Go to Scalemates and compare the instructions-especially the cockpit! Hasegawa’s is horrid!

You are correct on that, just from initial looking it did seem the same, or at the very least they cut their parts in a similar enough fashion to make the mistake.

Well, how about this one:

  ----Read this. Has accuracey problems nose to tail.

It’s not just the C model by Trumpeter, all of them have issues. I want to do a C but it will cost me lots for resin fixes. Play the game, pay the price! I guess.

Also note the mistake where the tail skid is shown wrong on Italeri’s instructions. It’s shown upside down in 2 pages of the instructions, that “tooth” behind the exhaust nozzle is NOT a tail hook, that’s the piston they are showing backwards. See the photo at the bottom showing a Misty FAC parked in Vietnam with the tail skid in the down position.

The Italeri kit has no floor to attach the tail skid and piston like the old ESCI kit had . It has a rectangular hole so I made a floor from .015" Evergreen plastic sheet. The first picture shows the rectangular hole and the second picture shows the floor installed with the tail skid and piston glued to it.

It just so Happens, I’m going to Build that Exact Kit; I built one Earlier as A Wild Weasel
