Missle Exhaust

Just wondering. Why is that all models have the rear of a missle closed off? Do they have a cap on them that is burnt off when fired? Or is just lazy molding on the part of the manufacturer?

If it supposed to be open, what do you guys use to open it?

most all the air to air do have a dust cover over the exhaust that is burned through when the motor fires.

Any idea what the color of this cover is? In this case, it would be Soviet-built air-to-air missles.

most all the ones I’ve seen have been black. the only Soviet I’ve seen have been pics but they look to be the same. Bob

I can’t answer about soviet missles but I used to build pheonix, amraam, sidewinder, and HARM for Alliant TechSystems. The covers we used were mostly black but sometimes red. The red was rare but it was used. But as far as soviet missles go, I really can’t say. I would hazard a guess that they used mostly the same. Not to many weapons manufactures get to decorative with dust covers.

Most of the ones i have seen on the F-16 ( sidwinders, amraams, AGM-88’s the harm , all had either black or a foam rubber color , kinda an orange biege tint , the AIM-120’S had a dark brown color and it was conical shaped, I am a Falcon C/C by the way and i saw the 120 when it was being tested in 91 at eglin, i dont think there is one set color, the HARM had a black plug .
