I picked up a vacuformed mig 31 and need decals. I’d like to do it and the mig 21 I’ve got in the same national makings. The 21 has three choices but who uses the 31? I’d like to do all the Migs in 1/72 and in the same country. I probably have to use Russia/Soviet to do that, but was curious if any more options existed. I do US and am still gathering research for the MIGs. I love their lines. Thanks for any help any any area.

i don’t think the MiG-31 was ever used outside Russia/CIS. The '31 was the technological successor of the Foxbat, and i doubt that Russia/CIS would have exported such an advanced interceptor, even to its allies. After all, the Foxbat performed along the same lines, was less advanced, and was a 20 year old airframe when the Foxhound came on the scene. For variety’s sake, you could create a bogus squadron of, say, and Indian or Egyptian '21s and '31s. [:)]

I stand corrected on Kazakhstan’s use of MiG-31s. I did some searching online and i found out that they operate (or at least used to operate) between 30 to 43 MiG-31s out of an airbase at “Zhana-Semey (Semipalatinsk)” by the 356th IAP (Istrebitel’nyi Aviatsionny Polk or Fighter Aviation Regiment). Apparently, the Russian Military was divided among the CIS according to land area, or something. I’ve also read that they are part of the joint defence force that operates with the air defence forces of the other CIS countries, so they may have a single paint scheme insigina(?). I couldn’t find any reference pictures for you on Kazakhstani 31s, though. I’ll keep my eyes peeled. I hope this helps. [:)]
