Basecoat is Duplicolor dark grey sandable primer; most of the panelwork was laid in with Pentel brushable pens in varying shades of grey and blue, panel-lines were done with a .05 mechanical pencil. Except for the canopy, no masking was done on the entire model - it was all done free-hand, including the painting of the engine-nozzles/tailpiece with acrylic paints. In roomlight it appears almost glossy black, but in sunlight all the panel variations stand out (walk past a Blackbird as I’ve done and you’ll see the same effect).
Great look plane. I liked the movie even though it starts out really slow but the dogfight scenes were excellent. I would also like to know if it is a kit or is it scratchbuilt?
It’s the prototype for my kit - everything for it was scratchbuilt except for some small parts - mostly vacform styrene plastic except for the resin tailpiece, cockpit, landing-gear/weapons, and wing support box. Not black resin, that’s just a multi-layered paint-job.
Clarifying the above, I scratchbuilt the original parts, mostly vacformed over resin or basswood plugs, and some parts cast from resin; the photos are of a kit buildup, so you’re looking at a vacform model. There’s a resin wing-support box inside the engines to which the lower halves of the wing are glued onto.
I drew up the blueprints from magazine photos and sketches in 1987 on a private contract for someone else, and carved a 1/48 scale basswood and spruce master for the same party, minus detail. Ten years ago I enlarged the plans and released a Phase I version of the MiG kit in late 2003. Decided to re-work everything to make the kit easier to assemble and also put more detail into it (pretty much like my Batura kit, I just keep improving on what has gone before).
