Mig 21PFM

I’d like to model a Laotian Mig 21PFM in 1/72. I don’t know much about the Mig, as I usually model WW2 types. I’m aware of the differences in the fuselage spine on various Mig 21 variants, but that’s about the extent of my knowledge.

Can anyone give me some advice on available PFM kits and/or details of converting another Mig 21 variant to a PFM? I know of the Zvezda and Bilek PFM kits, but haven’t found much in the way of detailed reviews of these models. Is there a Fujimi model that can be converted to a PFM with minimal work?

Since this subject is outside my usual sphere of interest, I’m not planning a highly detailed model filled with PE & resin add-ons. I just want a reasonably accurate model that looks the part.

The Mig-21 PFM or Fishbed F (NATO designation) was the first Fishbed variant equipped with a fixed windshield and a main canopy that opened to the right. The Mig-21 F-13/PF’s SK ejection seat was replaced by a KM-1 zero-zero ejection seat. All Mig-21 PFMs were equipped with a 5.3 sq meter vertical tail (the first of the wide chord fins) and a PT-21UK brake parachute container was mounted on the rudder’s base. The Mig-21 PFM was the first Fishbed version equipped with both the KT-102 nose wheel and the SPD-99 Rocket Assisted Take Off (RATO) system.
The Fujimi Mig-21 MF or Fishbed J is a later yet version but is very similar. The two biggest differences are the J has the fuselage spine faired about 60% of the way into the chord while the PFM fairing only goes about 15% of the way back. The other big difference is that the pitot boom on the nose of the PFM is centered on the top while the MF is offset to the right about 20 degrees. Most, if not all of the MF series had a rear vision mirror on the top of the main canopy, which was not present on the PFM.
The Fujimi kit is an excellent model of the Mig-21 and is very detailed. If you move the pitot boom to the center of the nose, file off the rear view mirror and just live with the fin fairing difference the Fujimi kit would be great. The J was the first to have two weapons stations under each wing. Leave off the outboard pair for the F.
