I am just starting to build a 1/48th scale Mig/21 MF (Academy kit). I need some documentation on the cockit colours. I still have to decide if I will build an all silver Russian one or a bulgarian Mig/21. I am alsothinking to build it as a Lancer of the romanian Air Force. What are the main external differences with the standard Mig/21 ?. thanks for any info or webpage indications.
Can’t help you with the differences between the 21 and the Lancer (should be the same as they were license built weren’t they?) but the interior on every MiG 21 I’ve been near has always been that dreadful turquoise. This has to be one of the most nauseationg colours I’ve seen on the inside of an aircraft. try www.lindenhillimports.com and see if they have anything for the conversion.
The gut curdling Turqoise is, sadly, the correct color.
Regards, Rick
Hmm, the color was meant to be soothing for the pilots. That’s why it is the same color as hospital gowns.
Testors makes that turquois colour in its Model Master enamel range.
As for the Lancer, it was a joint project involving Elbit of Israel to bring the Romanian MiG-21 MFs up to the MiG-29 avionics standard.
Internaly, the Lancer had an all glass cockpit, digital radar in place of the old analog unit.
Externally, the lancer had the 20mm belly gun pod replaced by a long narrow avionics fairing, there was an additional fairing on the right side of the upper fuselage just beneath the canopy hinge area. The Lancer also had different weapons pylons than the standard MF, this enabled the Lancer to carry such weapons as the AA-10 “Alamo” missile typically seen on MiG-29s and Sukhoi SU-27.
Hope that helps
Thanks to all for their precious help. I will just paint this strange turquoise colour. I still have to decide if I do an all silver or other colour.
Linden Hill lists a conversion set for the Lancer. It’s part # NECV48003RO. They also have the decal sheet for it.
Squadron Signal recently published a two part “Walk Around” series on the Mig-21. Part 2 covers the Mig-21MF Fishbed J with several color shots of the cockpit and many detailed shots and line drawings. A couple of the cockpit shots appear to be light blue, while others are the nauseating turquoise. The turquoise is correct.
