I’ve seen some excellent walk around photos that show a “canvas-type” cover on the sliding, polished section of the oleos on both front and main gear. How widespread was the use of these? Specifically, did the North Vietnamese Air Force utilize these covers on the Frescos they flew? Thanks for any help!

I had a look at my Osprey “MiG 17 and MiG 19 Units of the Vietnam War”. None of the photos in that book show the main gear strut oleos. As far as the nose gear goes, it would appear that both types were used with the oleo boot cover slightly more prevalent.
Thank you so much stik! Sounds like I’ll be scratching some boots. What would you use? I’m thinking white glue-soaked tissue. I’ve used that technique to make tarps on both my armor models, seems like it could be used for this too. They just won’t be very big though. Hmmmm…

You’re welcome Tex. I think that either glue soaked tissue, or lead foil would be the best easy methods. Or some epoxy putty sculpted to shape. And no they would not be big at all.
