I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with micro-sol discolouring the paint on their models? Not seriously discoloured or anything, but I’ve noticed that is seems to darken the colour a little. Is it just me?
I use Micro Set & Sol for all of my decal applications and have never experienced discolouring on my models. I always apply my decals over a Future gloss coat, which has cured for about 48 hours. The Future gloss coat over a flat paint does darken the shade very slightly, which is why I apply Future to the entire model and not just in the area where decals will be applied.
Ahh…okay, that’s a good point about applying it to the whole model. I’m still experiementing with these products, thanks for the tip.
I’ve had that problem when it comes to acrylic paints that I get too impatient to seal before decaling. A future coat or a gloss coat usually does the trick.
Thanks, I am using acrylic paint. I had sealed the model with a dull coat before decaling, but appearently that wasn’t good enough. I’ll have to get some Future for the next attempt.
I use acrylics and microsol/set all the time and don’t seal the paint before decalling (although its generally a gloss paint anyway) but have never had the problem.
I’ve had it both ways. I’ve had it affect the paint on some planes and not affect it at all on others. Not sure how or why because I really don’t do too much different between one plane and the next. For example, I used SnJ metal powder on two different Mustangs. One turned out better than my wildest dreams even after applying the MicroSol. Then I had another Mustang finished in the exact same manner yet the MicroSol seemed to have lightly stripped the finish off. It wasn’t bad but it was enough to make me unhappy and strip the whole plane and re-do it. Can’t figure that one out.

Did I read right, that you are putting your decals on over a dullcoat? If that is the case, you run the risk of having them silver.
Yeah, Wayne. I dropped the ball on that one, not sure what I was thinking. Brain in neutral situation there. I’m in the process of refinishing the model now.

By the way I’ve found the generic version of future for about half the price!! I can’t remember if I was at family dollar or the dollar tree. But they have acryrlic clear floor polish for $2 and some change as opposed to $5 and some change.
WRbridge, you might want to opt for this instead. I don’t know about you but money sure is tight around here!!

I just started the tail decals on my F-15E and there is a slightly foggy look under the clear decal film. I remember hearing this before but I believe it goes away after the decals have completely dried and another coat of Future is applied correct?
Update: After drying, the foggy look disappeared. [tup]

MikeV I also recall reading this happening if the Future hadn’t been given enough time to thoroughly dry.
How long after you’d applied the Future did you start on the decalling?
I waited 48 hours as I always do.
As I said though, the cloudy look disappeared after the decal dried so there is no problem so far. These are TwoBobs decals by the way.

Mike - I’ve found that both Two Bobs and Ministry of Small Aircraft Production decals tend to do that. Look really cloudy around and under the decals until fully dry. Think its the glue they use. The first time it happened to me all I could think was what the hell do I do now!
