Metalizer help

Hi Ya’ll,

I’ve sprayed Metalizer Buffable Aluminum Plate on a P-47. I realize now that I should have applied the olive drab stripe and white tail before, as well as the paint keeps coming off on my hands, and I have to apply decals. Is there any way I can get these done and still keep the sheen? I’ve tested Glosscote on an old part and that was unsatisfactory. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yeah, been there done that. Never do that again. I have used yellow sticky post- it notes for masking, but it still takes off metal, no mater what you do. I just read a tip on using wet coffee filters for maksing. Have not tried it, but may work without taking a lot of metal finish off. Otherwise, I first, cover the whole thing in Future floor wax. Several coats to get a a gloss finish, then mask with very low tack tape or post-its. Paint your other surfaces, then you may have to go back and mask the painted areas and redo the metal finish. Be very careful on masking any areas, the metal finish underneath does make a good vehicle for any overcoats. It will stay, but any pulling on it will lift the paint on top right off.

Or, if you’ve tried the above and it just does not work out, you could sand all the metal finish off and start over. That’s a lot of work, but the best way to go. Ask me how I know.

Hope this helps and good luck my friend.

I have opted to use testors 1290 chrome on my B36 bright sections as using buffing can be a nightmare, as you have experienced. You can achieve a very satisfactory result by using the right…“normal enamel” with built up light coats,
however you have to sequence plan the entire model paint job to avoid what you have described. Even wet masking over #1290 chrome, can leave residue, and if you future it…it really defeats the look of the paint (in my opinion).

good luck
