Mustang, I have some colour plates of a number of SCW 109’s. The plates indicate a dark green colour on top, but the pics of the real thing, all be it B&W appear much lighter, I had always though they were RLM 02. One photo caption says they were delivered in RLM 63 pale grey and then re painted.
Mustang,
I think I’d like to get in on this. I’ve never done a GB and I’m currently working on only my second model since getting back into building after many years away. Sounds like a lot of fun and a great way to learn from all you guys.
Not sure which kit I will build. Lacking experience in knowing the good kits out there so if you guys have any suggestions on a relatively
pain free build with decent detail I’d be much appreciative! I’d like to stay with 1/48 scale I think and I like the later versions of the 109 but I’m open to about anything. Thanks very much for any feedback.
Andy
That’s another victim into the GB pit of lost souls. [:D]
OPP’s, sorry, did I say that out loud. What I meant to say was welcome to your first GB Andy. If you want an idea of what to expect, check out Mustangs 190 GB. The most important rules, post pics and have fun.
What’s your scale of choice.
Well come on with it Andy! When it comes to 48th scale, usually anything Tamiya or Hasegawa are the hot tickets to the best of both worlds pertaining to ease and level of detail. Revell’s Bf109 G-10 is a sure bet as well in terms of ease and low parts count.
Stay away from Eduard if your just easing back into the waters.
Thanks for the info! I’ll check em out and let you know which I’ll be tackling.
Hey Mustang, count me in. I have a old 1/48 Monogram 109G-10. Ive also have some photoetch parts for the cockpit. This will be my first GB and i cant wait to try this out.
Hey Joe, I came across this Kagero book on the 109C/D from a seller I follow on ebay. Although it focuses on the Polish front it may have some worthwhile photos. Also, it’s missing the decal sheet that would normally come with it. Just thought you may want to check it out.
I plumb forgot to say what my build is gonna be! Decided to do the Monogram(Revell) G-10. Got new wheels, a PE set and just ordered some decals. I pulled it off the shelf last week and set it out but forgot till I saw jubya70’s post yesterday. This is gonna be epic.
Joe, sorry for the late reply (not always finding time to visit FSM anymore). I attached the CA 109 paint instructions for the SCW early 109’s, just has “silver” for exterior but remember reading that the fabric control surfaces were more RLM 02, (which is what I did) may have read that in the Brett Green build (which I’ve also attached and recommend reading) http://hsfeatures.com/features04/bf109v4bg_1.htm
Glad to have you jubya!! And welcome to the wide world of Group Builds buddy! [:D]
**freem:**Another Monogram / Revell build joins the ranks. I’m looking forward to see what you do with this kit. Seems like a popular one. Welcome aboard!
**Joe Rix:**Thank you alot for the link. Will check it out brutha!!
**Reasoned:**Thank you for the link on the Brett Green build and for the painting layout on this thing. I already have that downloaded both and will read soon!! (thanks for the inspiration on this one as well!! )
Afternoon all… Joe, These pictures are of the kit for the Model Show coming up at Hobby Town the 11th of October. This of course is not part of the 109 build and I was going to but decided there was no time for WIP pictures, sorry. I will be away all of next week and will not be able to do any building so I had to finish this weekto be ready for the show. With that being said here are the pictures and Thanks for allowing them to be posted here.
Doug
This is the kit I selected for the build and even thou I also bought sone Eduard PE for it, you really dont need it. It is a very well supplied and detailed kit and other then some AM decals if desired to change the Group and staffle it would build very nicely OOB. There were a butt load of optional parts left over which come in handy for other projects. For example, You have the option to do the standard tail or the taller wooden tail. I chose the taller wooden option.
Oh… it does not include a pilot, I had to rob this one from a stash kit.As I stated earlier these are not the decals that came with the kit, I chost to do an aircraft of VI/Jg53 flying out of Italy in 1944.
Sorry I hit the wrong button… heres a bit more…
Well as I said the kit itself cost about $24 bucks and for the money, IMHO is a damn nice kit. Well thanks again for letting me post these before the build starts and of course… this should not be considered part of the build. Take care all!
Doug
Absolutely Fantastic Doug! Very beautifully done. That will be an eye popper for sure at at the contest. Good luck.
Dang bud!!! That thing came out great. Was that prop in the box or did you obtain that AM? Just loooooooove me some 109’s!!! Way to go Doug!!
Thanks guys, Joe R , I hope your right, There is usually some stiff compitition at the show. Many talented builders here, the show covers almost any type of build from figures to braile build and much inbetween. The toughest brackets are aircraft and armor.
Joe (M) the “running prop” is cut from clear acetate sheet. Depending on how heavy you want, alot of goods are sold in these types of packaging, You know, thost clear plastic sonic welded containers you cuss trying to get open? LOL… This piece was from Hobby Lobby, They sell in sheets about 2’x3’ and its a tad thin but works quite well. I just lay out the prop blades and the impeller hub, measure with a compass, scribe on the sheet and carefully cut out, Thay make a tool for doing this but I’m just as happy doing this way.
Thanks again guys and I’ll let you know when show is over how we did.
Doug
That’s really neat, Doug. Great job! Very unique way to show prop spin. Good luck in the contest. Surely you’ll be hard to beat!
Thanks Tom… We’ll find out soon enough! LOL…As I said, lots of talent in this show and I like it that way, If you win, It makes you feel you’ve really done something. Show usually draws about 75 to 100 builders, in various classes.
Doug
Now that is one sweet looking build Doug. Nice.
Ok, I’ve had a change of heart. I’ve decided to not build my Tamiya kit for this but instead I found and ordered a Zevezda 109- F4. Apparently its a really super nice kit. 1/48. I am wanting to do something super nice for this GB and this thing has over 200 pieces and is supposed to be the most accurate 109 ever built. We’ll see about that. But anyway, that’s where I stand now.
