Mercury 1/12

Greetings All,

I’m new to the forum and a “reborn” model builder. I just ordered the Mercury 1/12 kit and can’t wait for it to arrive. Has anyone put together a “color guide” for picking the correct colors?

If you look in page 2 of the real space forum you will find every link you possibly need,just a note on inst, panel colors they varied depending on spacecraft mostly light greys,light and dark tans and browns and light blue on life-support portions of panels.

There are a lot of Mercury references online, and your search can start with a simple google for “mercury capsule” in either the straight web search or images. I might suggest that you take a good long look at Rick DeNatale’s Wiki pages on Mercury:

Rick,

Took a look at your site for the first time in a long time. Can’t wait until your kits come out!. I’d love to have the ‘Solar System Explorer’.

Would you happen to know anyone with a good soviet space site? I have the old Vostok injected plastic kit but I’d like to add detail to the capsule exterior section and have been having a hard time getting a good shot of that part of the vehicle.

If you are a member of IPMS USA there is a big article on that kit in this months’ Journal. They love the kit! And it is huge!!!

I realize I got in on this thread a bit late, obviously, but I have a build coming up for an article I’m writing on the Atomic City/MRC kit (it took me this long to convince my editor that a spacecraft qualifies as a flying machine). So I am facing the same problem with colors, especially the instrument panels. I’m making a semi-educated guess, based on my examination of a few color photos and the craft on display at JSC in Houston, that much of the structure around the interior of the craft was the same gray as used on tactical aircraft cockpits of the time: FS 36231.
But those odd pastel colors and browns on the instrument panels (I’m doing Sigma 7) have me stumped. They look like they might most likely be found among the Mister Kit line of WW I aircraft colors, which are fine acrylic paints.
Any help directing me to the FS numbers, or paint mixtures appropriate to this bird would be greatly appreciated.

I hope to start in the next month or so on one of the two Atomic City kits I have . As for research, I have downloaded several old NASA documents concerning the Mercury program. Most of them have been linked to or described on the forums here.

Regarding control panel colors, I found the text below on page 43 in this document:

The instrument panel shall be coded to indicate specific functional areas by color. These shall be as follows:

FUNCTION - SPACE CAPSULE COATING
Life Support - Light Blue XA-266
Electrical - Light Green XA-267
Radio - Dark Green XA-269
Warning - Medium Green XA-268
Flight - Light Grey XA-265
Altitude and Descent - Tan XA-262
Fuel Indication - Dark Brown XA-264

I have no idea exactly what shade these numbers correlate to in the FS color chart. Maybe someone here has some info on what these XA numbers are.

hello people , i ran into a problem : i painted the astronaut with Testors metallic colors! and it did seem to dry what did i do wrong?? its vinyl and i never worked withit before! !Help!
