Meng Fokker DR.1 TriPlane Complete

Another kit completed during the previous site’s downtime, Meng’s boxing of the WingNut Wings 1/32 Fokker DR.1.

Probably going back to the Monogram Snoopy Sopwith Camel and the Red Baron’s triplane, I’ve always loved this particular aircraft. And the story of the Red Baron is a good one. The kit includes several painting scheme options, most of them far more complicated than this all-red scheme, but that love for that old Monogram kit was tough to overcome.

For a WWI subject, it’s actually a very simple kit to build. There is very little rigging. The cabanes and interplane struts (usually where I fail with WWI builds) are engineered well and make it very nearly impossible to mis-align. The kit came with a PE fret for the seatbelts and the cooling sleeves for the guns. I added Gaspatch turnbuckles, and used narrow gauge guitar wire for the rigging. I painted the prop with oils and put on a coat of clear orange.

This was an enjoyable kit to build. I read some reviews stating it is not as polished a kit as it would have been had WNW released it, but having not build a WNW (I have 2 in the stash), I can’t comment on that.

That came out fantastic.

Aggieman! Been a while. That looks great. Such an iconic plane & livery.

Well done, Stephen. Another one I need to get to!
