Memorial Build

I am just dealing with the loss of our mate Toshi and I began to think about all of the modelers who have been members of this site and have now passed. I have not been a member long, but I have enjoyed many friendships here and been given terrific support. Forget the technical problems that occasionally plauge the site and issues with FSM. For the most part, this is a great and caring community of modelers and those who pass are much missed.

I was wondering if there was support for an annual, or bi-annual, group build to remember those who have passed. Before you all start shouting me down, I know that this should probably have been raised in the Group Builds section, but I thought that it would attract more notice here, besides I do not have the experience, or the knowledge, to run a group build.

I also realise that it could not be named after any one individual, but I was thinking of something along the lines of a ‘Passed Members Group Build’, where we choose a model of any subject and dedicate the build to someone who has passed away.

Maybe this is a stupid idea. Maybe I’m being too sentimental, but I just thought that it might be a way of honouring our mates and keeping their names alive on the site.

Not stupid at all. I like the idea. [Y]

An excellent notion, indeed.

That’s the problem with an ‘aging’ hobby…the list of lost friends we commemorate just gets longer and longer…

An honorable consideration. I’m in support of it.

Yeah, I like it!!!

Sure I can dig around and find a Corsair to build for Toshi! No sure what any of the other passed members would have liked.

im in as well! As I posted in my thread looking for Toshi news, I lost my dad this summer. I have memories of building my first kit with him ( a '72 scale brown plastic spitfire) and he loved the Corsai…I’ll build the revell boxing in memory of both of them!

There used to be a Bernie build every year after he passed. You can name it anything you wanted, as long as it’s family friendly. I’d be in with a Phantom if one kind or another.

When my time comes, if anyone feels the need, a Phantom or a BUFF.[;)]

I have a couple Corsairs to put into the mix, Toshis favorite aircraft was the F4- ?,( all mrks i think). I have an old Revell 32nd that needs love to be brought up to speed, as well as a 32nd Trumpy D model.

Great idea Dodgy.

If it’s gonna be a Corsair Build, I have a 1/72 Tamiya and a Guillow’s stick and tissue rubber powered kit.

I’m all in favour, mate, a very good idea. Could I suggest we call it “Absent Friends”, after the traditional toast to those who have gone before?

I like that idea. And make it with no end date…

If a completed section, not only the subject, but who it’s for.

I like that idea too. I also like the idea of no end date.

Sounds good.

Thank you all for your response. I agree with Hutch about the name, but as for the rules I’m not qualified to comment, or run it, as I have yet to complete my first group build. It would be great if some of the experienced group build organisers could provide some input.

I too really like Hutch’s name!

Group builds aren’t that hard to run. You just have to check every day or two to keep on top of things and don’t let it get away from you.

I agree also, I also like the “no end” timeline. It would allow us to honor future friends without running up a new thread.

If I can speak, a thread like this in a way can be self sustaining, we can add our memorial builds and comments in one location. New folks can also get a sense of the history and people who helped mold these forums into the amazing place it is.

It is a fantastic idea. [Y]

Sounds good. I can think of four possably five that I can remember

Toshi

Lewbub

Hunter

JTilly

Possably Matt-Joachim

Like all families, time moves on and so do the members, replaced by new ones.

BTW Dodgy, the only was to get experience hosting a GB is jump it. Like Gam said, it’s not hard, just keep up with it.

This just crossed my mind. There are " In Memorium" pages in the IPMS Journal, if set up smoothly this idea could be similar. Kinda like a " living obituary" and an electronic way to keep up to date on who has left us for the big table above.

I think that it is a great idea. I am fairly new to this forum site but the closeness and respect shown to each other has impressed me. In June of 2020 our local model club lost a very dear and beloved member and we held a memorial build in that person’s name and it was well received, so much so that we intend to run the build each year. Our hobby ,though frequently solitary in its nature, encourages camaraderie amongst its participants. Though I never “met” Toshi, he sounded like an extraordinary individual and an excellent modeler so I think that it would be respectful and appropriate to honor him and all the other members of this forum who have passed away.
