I am working on this ME109. I am trying to do things correctly this time. This is my first foray into camoflauge patterns and so forth. I am using an airbrush for the first time as well. In terms of the canopy over the cockpit, how do people normally do the masking? Is it tape, parafilm or what. I assume it is a tremendously tedious task.
I use a brush on mask from Ambroid called EZ Mask. It’s actually quite easy to use, and as long as you have a smooth canopy base, removes just as easy. You should be able to find it or something similar at your local hobby shop. Just ask the salesperson for “liquid mask.”

I use Tamiya masking tape and a new sharp #11 X-acto blade.
NS… I use Bare metal Foil. They sell an instructoin booklet on “How To” but basicly smooth into corners or curves with toothpick , sanded to remove sharp edges.Cut away foil with sharp # 11 exacto knife against framing.Remove foil from area to be painted. Break paint line after painting and glossing with same #11 blade,tease off foil with toothpick. Clean any stickness with “Goo Gone” from local chain drug store.Used draftsman tape before descovering foil. Am told pre-cut " EZ-Masks "are very good but haven’t tried them , also cost factor involved…Chief John
I picked up the liquid mask last night. The question is, do you apply this stuff to the whole canopy and then using a sharp blade just take it off the ribs to be painted? Or, do you just try to paint the large areas inside to protect them. My guess is I would never get them to be straight this way. For this canopy, I chose to simply mask the old fashioned way with tape and do it in portions. It is a pain in the neck but I didn’t want to screw up the only canopy I currently have. Any help is appreciated.
try white glue. since it is a me 109 it should be easey. use masking tape to mask the frame, then have 7:3 water to white glue to paint it on, wait about 15 min the peel off the masking tape then touch up then paint
yes, with liquid mask it’s difficult to get a straight line. try this, cut thin strips of masking tape, apply along the side of the frames (easy on a 109) then fill in the ‘holes’ with the liquid mask. As was said above, Tamiya masking tape is very good, it’s what I use. Yes, it is fiddly to apply, but if properly smoothed down it will do it’s job, peel off nicely and not leave a deposit.
