Me 424, Me 262 & Mistel 5

For the last 3 years all my builds have been for GB’s. Because i have been going from one GB to the next i haven’t had time to finish any dioramas for the kits. But lately i have had a bit of time to do some catching up and i have recently finished 3 dio’s. 2 of the kits were built early last year, the third was finihed just over a week ago, and i was able to finish it as a dio for the build.

All my aircraft dio’s at the moment are kept rather simple. This is due to lack of time plus i haven’t built an aircraft dio for 9 years or more, so i am just breaking myself in gently.

All 3 are 1/72nd scale.

Firstly, Dragon Mistel 5 built for the Endgame GB. I added a few parts from an eduard PE set and painted with Xtracolour enamels. It was then given a pastel chalk wash.

Next, Academys Me 262C-1a built for the RD III GB. Even though i have the Hasegawa kit for this variant, i used the academy kit has it has the cut out tail section included, though this did need some altering. I added an Eduard PE set and a strengthing band from lead foil. It was painted with Xtracolour enamels and the aircraft specific decals are from the hasegawa kit as these seemed more accurate.

Finally, Dragon P.1101 for the swing Wing GB. this was the worlds first swing wing aircraft. But it only existed as a prototype and never flew. The wings were adjusted on the ground before flight as the Germans had not yet worked out how to adjust the wings in flight.

I have built this as a possable production aircraft assuming that the wings now adjust in the air. The wings, which on the kit were fixed swept back were brough to the forward position. I added small wing gloves from sheet styrene and moved the pitot probe from the left wing to the nose. Finally the wing pylons were adusted to the correct angle of attack.

This was built OOB and painted with Alclad and xtracolor enamels. I have also given it a possable designation of Me 424A-1.

this now leave me with 3 aircraft and 4 1/35th Armour dio’s to do, but these afre a start.

Hey Bish these look great! Sharp looking paint schemes, nice weathering, great job on the airstrips- all around terrific work. I esp like the realistic looking NM on the P.1101/Me-424. The different shades of aluminum look very convincing.

I like the simple dios since it shows off the a/c as it should without distracting stuff. And the figures give a nice sense of scale.

Only question is the nameplates (I’m assuming that’s what they are) look a solid colour. Have you not put the names on them yet, is it the lighting that they don’t show up, or am I blind?

Thanks guys. I do plan on doing some dio’s in the future with a bit more going on. Such as engines being fixed, bombs being loaded etc. I like to try and portray realistic scenes.

Yes, the namplates have been marked up. I know the first one is hard to see as the wood stain is to dark. The other two are showing up when i look at the pics.

Ahhhh, funny I can see all the nameplates clearly on my home computer. The monitor on the office one must be a great deal darker.

I think you may have stumbled across something though!!! The concrete finish with the 262 makes it look like the plane is moving. I think you could get away (farely convincingly) with a plane just lifting off from that one![Y]

I think you’re right fermis, if the dark seam between concrete sections was feathered/blurred I think it could be quite convincing…hmmmmm

Great work on all Bish. It’s funny, I have the Hasegawa kit of the 262 completed (the first time I ever had to cut a hunk of plastic out of an otherwise fine kit!), and the P1101 I have built up from the Revell Germany boxing - great minds think alike!

Sorry guys, i missed all the posts from Tigerman down. that would have been about the time i was heading to the falklands, so that will be why i missed them.

fermis, you have a good point there. Of course that was not my intention, i was more trying to give the look of marks left behind by the tires of aircraft. But looking at it again, it does give that illusion. And its something i have been thinking about, how to show an aircraft taxing or in the process of taking off. I will have to practice this, see if i can create the impression of aircraft moving at different speeds.

Now, i just need to remember how i did this one.

Thanks. taking photos is still somthing i am working on. Luckly my model building is better than my photography.
