masking tape

has any one used blue masking tape that painters uses is it good for clear parts,or Tamiya tape because Im still having trouble using paraflim it is “NOT” as easy as others say it is even after reading on how to use it I must have wasted several pieaces by now trying to that stuff(parafilm) any suggestions would be helpfull only if it pretains to the blue masking tape or Tamiya-thank you

I have used the Tamiya tape many times for masking canopies. The blue painter’s tape could be difficult to use for this application, as it does not stretch as much as the Tamiya tape.

thank’s

I use 3M blue painter’s tape on canopies without any troubles or difficulty. It doesn’t stick hard, so I usually have to double check all my edges to make sure they haven’t shifted before I paint, but I’ve always done that regardless of the mask I use. Occasionally, if the paint has been on for more than a week and a half, I have to take some Goo Gone to the model to remove some of the adhesive but thats a very intermittent and easily solved problem.

Check out Shurtape’s Razor Edge Gold tape, available at Sherwin Williams paint stores

It appears to be the equivalent to Tamiya’s tape. I’ve used it recently to mask the dazzle camo on a 1:700 scale USS Pittsburgh, and it has worked well.

Just a note, I went to Serman Williams this weekend to grab some of the Shurtape Razor Edge Gold but could only find Shurtape Razor Edge (no “Gold” in the name). As far as I can tell it is the same stuff, so I don’t kow what the difference between the “gold” and the stuff I have is.

I used Sherman Williams tape for the first time today. I am working on a Horton flying wing with a two tone pattern on the upper surface. I highly recommend it over the blue tape. Shurtape Razor Edge is a bit thinner and lays over curve surfaces very nice. I may be wrong but I think the word gold comes from the color not the name. I plan to discard all my blue tape and stay with the Shurtape.

I just did a quick search, and the Shurtape Razor Edge Gold is CP-60 (Shurtape’s designation), while Shurtape Razor Edge is CP-60. So, yeah, they are the same thing, with the “Gold” being the color.
