I guess this is how you call them… round windows on the side of transport aircraft. I’m building the hercules and i’m still wondering how to mask these windows to get a nice clear job… Has any1 ever tryed play doh? I could prolly shape it and trim it to correct size and leave it for the whole painting stag and clean the windows with some alcool when i’m done…
I also was thinking of making round masking tape pieces using a compass but masking tape has fibers which will draw the paint in so…
My method involves the Waldron Punch-and-Die set. Stick some Tamiya tape to a piece of thin acetate, then use the appropriate sized punch to whack out as many perfect little discs as you need. The acetate acts as a carrier- peel off the tape and apply to the “porthole”. By the way, these little circles can be used to mask round-cornered windows- put the dots down first, connect with straight strips and fill in the middle. Viola! Don’t worry about paint creep- just don’t spray it on too “wet”- thin coats are better! Good luck with your project, comrade!
Well, how about this: get a circle template and mask around the appropriate-sized hole. Hold or tape it in place over your porthole and, using low air pressure, spray liquid mask over the window. Check for overspray- use a pencil eraser to clean that off. paint the plane and carefully pull up the masks with some tape. How big are these ports, btw- and how many?
If you have Liquid mask, that’ll work just fine. You can also make your own liquid mask by putting white glue in some water and liquid soap. If you have any frisked paper or a knife attached to compass, you can cut circles out of masking tape. Shouldn’t be any different than how you mask a canopy.
Easiest way? Get some liquid mask (it’s pretty cheap actually, and rather versitile) and simply put a drip on each window. Perfect circle, unless you decided to mess with it. Like I did… [;)]
