Hi everyone,
i’ve recently been building a 1/72 BBMF Lancaster and now i’ve come to the stage where i need to mask the camoflage. I’m going to be using tamiya spray paint (XF-52 and XF-61). Can anyone advise me on the best way to mask the camoflage and go about painting it?
I don’t know what the color #s equal out to be…assuming brown and green, with a black underside???
I would spray the brown first, let dry. I personally, like to use “poster-tac” to mask camo. (It’s a soft, sticky, putty used to stick posters up o walls, and can be found at any office supply store) Silly putty could be used as well. Anyway, I roll it out like a worm and stick it to the outside of the camo pattern, filling in betwwen with masking tape. Once that is done, spray your green. Pull off the masking, mask the top/sides with the same method, and spray the black.
Make sure to spray in light coats, it’s very easy to over do it with rattlecans. If you get too much paint, it’ll build up along the mask…makes a real mess out of things!!!

Yes, should be the same stuff. I use it as well for a lot of my soft masking.
Alex Don’t use Blu-Tac, it will be a right pain in the butt. Bostic make something called White tac, its similar but alot easier to work with. Its not grainy and comes off alot easier. Alot of out American cousins use silly putty, but i have not been able to find it in the UK. But i have found white tac to be a very good alternative.
I’ll give it a try. But do you mean White Tack made by UHU or Blu-Tak (White) made by Bostik?
Opps, didn’t realise there was tow. Its the Bostik white stick and fix that i use.
By the way, noticed you are in Norwich. Do you use any model shops in the City. I haven’t been around the centre for years, i just normally go up, see my mum, and come home again. Was woundering if it was worth having a walk around. When i started in the hobby i used to live in Langleys and Kellers and didn’t know if they were still worth paying a visit.
I know Langleys has got quite alot of stuff, don’t know about Kellers though.
A ModelZone has recently opened outside one of the entrances to the castle mall. I went their to get some more paint and glue a couple of days ago and found they had a really wide selection of stock. It’s definently worth a visit!
The putty is a bloody brilliant idea! i would have never guessed, i know understand how people get such nice camo lines
Thanks Alex. There is a Model Zone in basingstoke near where i am based. Its not to bad, but as far as aircraft goes its nearly all Airfix. I did go to Norwich last night and stayed at my mums, but wasn’t able to get round the City. I will have to have a look after xmas. You should give Kellers a try, they used to have a great range when i used to get my kits in Norwich back in the 80’s and 90’s.
Putty is great stuff, but can be awkward if you want a feathered adge.
