There was an tip in FSM a number of years ago about using a woman’s face mask as masking liquid. I used the stuff for years and then transfered the remainder to a small glass jar which I am still using! Unfotunately, I don’t remember the name of the product nor the date of the FSM tip so that I can look it up. Does anyone out the the name of the product or where I can find the tip?
Nowadays you can just to to any Hobby Lobby and buy a liquid masking product made by Ambriod.
Essentially it is a water base rubber cement.

I used the Microscale product lastnight for the first time on a kit part and am very impressed with it! I’ve tinkered with it once but didn’t really trust the stuff. Finally I tried it on a prop spinner to make the different bands for a checker nose. Used it on flat paint. It looked very thin when dry but I shot it anyway. Worked like a charm! I’m gonna use it on my Ju-88 canopys next.
You can make your own masking liquid also. The recipe is white glue, a few drops of dishwash detergent to give it a rubbery consistency when it’s dry, and a few drops of food coloring so you can see it better.
Hi fellas,
Excuse my ignorance, I’m still relatively inexperienced at this game, but due you mask off the canopy or part you don’t want to get paint on with masking tape, and then use the masking liquid to fill in what’s left or do you paint round the canopy with it leaving only the “metal” parts that you want to paint. I’ve just attempted masking off a Cobra canopy, but it took ages to do and I still got a bit of paint seeping under the tape as well as glue residue from the tape laft on the glass.
Thanks in advance,
Rich
With the liquid masks you typically cover the entire surface area with the material, let it dry for a couple of hours and then score the mask around the frames of the canopy. then remove just the material from the frames since that is what needs the paint.
Be sure to use a new blade and use very little pressure. You want to score the plastic as little as possible.
You might also try Bare metal foil. I’ve used this primarily for canopys for years as it’s much easier to see your progress while cutting out the frames.
I agree with hksshooter - it might seem expensive, but using Bare Metal Foil has given me much better results with canopy masking than anything else I’ve tried - painter’s tape, Scotch Magic tape, Testors tape [tdn], Elmer’s white glue, some weird blue stuff whose name escapes me, etc.
I’ve had good luck with the Ambroid liquid mask on a 1/72 scale F-4 canopy I did. The important thing was to use two coats and then cut very carefully.
Oh, it also helped that I dipped the canopy in Future twice. [:)]
I’ve not tried the metal foil approach, however.

Hi guys!
Im using masking liquid for the first time and have some questions, and i thought id ask them here instead of starting a new thread…
Currently im using Mr hobby, Mr mask sol. Its working out ok, though i think its a bit old, and has some lumps + stringy bits in it. The problem i have with it is that its sometimes hard to remove, i use a toothpick to scrape it off, but this sometimes leaves marks on the paint. Does anyone know of anything i could use to make it come up easier?
Also, my 2 LHS’s either have humbrol masksol or microscale liquid mask. would any of these two be better to use? also, im sure the humbrol masksol(i think the MS one is too, but not sure) is water based, so would it come off if i soaked it in water?? should i get one of thes masks of just stick it out with the mr hobby stuff??
thanks!
I’ve never used the liquid mask on anything but a canopy. However, trying to get it off with some water probably won’t hurt if the paint underneath is well cured.
Good luck!
Have you tried using masking tape?
Press a piece of tape on the dried liquid mask near the edges, pull the tape up and hopefully it lifts an edge that you can grab. Of course be careful of your newly applied paint, better yet, let it dry for awhile like I did.
It’s worked for me long ago when I tried liquid mask stuff, don’t remember the name of it, just that it was a latex based cosmetic product that my Mom had.

i use the ambroid and also have something called parma(says not for clear plastic, but i tried and it doesn’t hurt it at all…sometimes when i can’t get it off easily i use a low heat setting on a hair dryer for a few seconds and it loosens up the mixture again
