Masking issues with Tamiya paint

Hello;

I am going to shoot my F4U with Tamiya paints and was wondering if there are any masking issues to avoid, I thin with laquer thinner so I think paint adherence should be good. Any thoughts.

I have been using Tamiya acrylics in the airbrush for several years now & haven’t really noticed any issues that you wouldn’t find with paint in general. I always make sure I have a good primer coat down now, with Humbrol & Modelmaster enamels I often skipped that step.

Is there something in particular you’re worried about? Paint pulling up when the masking is removed?

You shouldn’t have any problems if you:

  • Make sure that the surface is clean before applying the base coat (or prime, if that’s your preference)
  • Make sure that the base coat is properly cured, preferably overnight for flats (can take a week or more for gloss depending on the thickness of the coat ) before you mask up.

OK sounds good. Thanks

Just one more slight issue that I have come across at times with Tamiya Gloss acrylics. Even after days of cure time, the paint can sometimes pick up the texture of the masking tape, so it pays to remove masking tape as soon as practical. I have not had this happen with the flats.

Depending on the masking you’re doing and how long you’ll have to have the tape in place, it may not be a bad idea to seal the paint with a clear coat before masking.

I tend to prefer mixed masking materials…tape for edges, then fill in big areas with post-its or something…and with some paints (never Tamiya, but you never know), I’ve had the tape mess with the sheen of the paint. This was most evident when I tried White Ensign enamels, and is among the reasons I won’t be using the again.

wjbwjb29: I went bonkers checking out Frog Tape Pro Painters Masking Tape. Hit YouTube and you’ll see dozens of tests by other would be “investigative reporters”. You can get the green stuff anywhere that stocks wall paint, although you may have to look a bit harder it you want the yellow Delicate Surface version.
