Masking inside intakes?

allo ppls of te modeling realm

how the heck do you mask inside an intake?

and how do you make sure that your masking isn’t crooked?

thanks!

Well, here’s the method I use.

First, get some masking tape, and cut it to a straight edge. Then measure out the distance you want it inside and stick it down with the razor edge side inside. Repeat this until all of the area is masked.

I use makeup sponges ( yeah I know) anyway you can find them at a drug store or walmart etc… They are like a rubber sponge usualy white and not expensive. I cut them to about the size I want and then shove them in what you dont want paint to get into. They are easily trimmed with a pair of scissors. You can see in the pic of my wildcat one in the nose and two in the cockpit. Hope this helps

Hmm, never thought of that, nice looking Wildcat too[tup]

Some people like to wad up some tissue paper & wet it down & then

stuff it into the openings such as intakes, Cockpits, etc that are near

impossible to ask off

I totally agree with the use of make up sponges. Use them all the time and find them very handy. ALOT less work as well!

Good luck

Dave, that is one awesome, albeit is slightly distrubing, idea! Consider me slightly smarter after having read your post! Thanks.

Jin,

I prefer using wetted paper towels strips wadding up and stuffing inside then let dry before painting. I mask wheel wells this way and it works perfectly. The trick is not to pack down the paper towel strips inside but leave it loose enough that you can remove them with twezzers or hemostats after paint has dried.

Ed!!! Get… Out… Of …My… Mind… There isnt enough room for the both of us![(-D]

I found a cheaper version of the make-up sponge. Go to Wal-Mart (or equivalent) and buy the foam they sell to insulate around a window air conditioner. It comes a strip about 2in. X 2in. about 3 feet long. Enough for many, many models can be bought for under $5. You can trim it a little bigger than the opening, stuff it in and it will expand to fill the opening. Its easy to get out and re-usable.

I just masked and painted this F-16 intake a couple days ago.
You can plainly see that it was masked with Tamiya masking
tape and blue painter’s tape. I took 6mm wide peices of Tamiya
tape and cut them down the middle so they were 3mm strips.
Then I just fit them in there until they were right! It took
several tries and about an hour to get right. Then 5 minutes
to paint, LOL - Mask right, paint once!
