Masking Camo with Sticky-Tack (Spitfire)

Hey all,

I’m trying a technique which is new for me. A friend in the local hobby club says that sticky-tack makes a great masking agent for complex camoflage. I’m going to try it out tomorrow, but first I’m going to share a pic. It looks pretty darn funny to me.

Thanks for the update and technique, Chris. Looking forward to see how it turns out. You must be back from the small sandbox out west, eh?

Intersesting, let us know how it turnes out.

This is a technique used by many modelers. I first read about it in some of the British Mags several years ago, although they refer to it as Blue-Tac. Same stuff, just a different color. I’ve tried it & had mixed results, but I’ve seen some models that turned out very well. Let us know how you like the end result.

Regards, Rick

I tried silly putty once and the paint turned it to goo… Maybe next time I’ll use some chewed bubble gum.[:D]

Can’t wait to see it “unmasked”… let me know how it turns out.

I sprayed my spit with a nice Olive Drab/Olive Green. I had to approach the areas around the sticky-tack border from 2 or 3 different directions. I peeled away some of the sticky tack to find a nice camo border which isn’t too hard or too soft. I’m going to wait a little while longer to peel the rest off, because I don’t want to mar the paint while it sets. I’m happy with the results so far. I’ll post more pics soon.

Looks great so far… can’t wait to see more.

I just took most of the stuff off, and I’m very happy with the results. I recommend this technique to anybody. However, I have to give props to Paul for telling me about it.

I have used silly putty for a long time and found it to work great. I spray with only acrylics, so it does not effect the putty.

Cheers
Thom

Your Spitfire looks good. I have been tempted to use that technique in the past, but just never got around to doing it. I think that I will try it on my next camo model. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Your paint job looks really good. I use a similar technique…roll the blue-tac in snakes and put under a paper template. That also works great.

Nice job on the camo. I really like using that technique. I have also heard of using Parafilm-M from Micro Mark as a masking material. I would like to give that a try. Can not wait to see more keep up the good work.

Thanks all for the encouragement. I’ve really enjoyed this build so far. I’m looking forward to getting it done. I’m really pleased with the paint. I guess that’s one of the things which attracted me to the spit in the first place. I’ll post pics when I get it done.

Semper Fi,
Chris

I have used that stuff too. If you come across the orange stuff run away, it leaves a residue

you can see the residue as a ornage mark on the wing root. I had to sand it off ruining my paint job so I did it the old fahion way

I masked it off with thin strips of Tamiya tape and the results…

So becareful which one you get because you can cause more problems then you want.

Any residue troubles with the yellow stuff ridleusmc? I’m really tempted to try this technique on the Mossie GB.

i’ve sometimes used licquid mask to fill in the boders( atfter making the outlines with blue tak )instead of tape or paper.much quicker and of course much smellier !

She looks great Chris. Glad the sticky tac worked out well for ya. I cannot take credit for this idea though. I read about it a while back on another site and there was an article about masking with silly putty in an older FSM article.

Jackets fan I have used the yellow and the blue stuff in the past with no residue problems what so ever. Only problem I had was some of the tac when pulled off stayed behind. This was easily solved by taking a clump of the stuff and dabbing it onto what had stayed behind after the paint had a chance to set up a bit. It pulled right up with no problems what so ever. Of course I only used Acrylic Paint I don’t know what enamals would do to it.

Jeff thanks for the heads up on the Orange Stuff I haven’t found ony of that color yet, but if I do I will run for the hills like you suggest.

Paul

i love sticky tack. all my camo themed planes were done with this stuff. on the downside, it does nothing to help me develop my freehand airbrushing skills though.

AJACKETSFAN I didn’t have any trouble with residue with the yellow stuff. Like Paul said, I just dabbed it with a clump of sticky tack.

olsen, thanks for the tip, but I have bad luck with liquid mask

loftycomfort, those are some great looking migs

Paul, In case you were wondering. It was Sean’s spit that motivated me to build one.

Everybody,

Chris

looks really nice ridleusmc!

Does the silly putty work well with this? I saw someone say so above but I was wondering more, how easily does it come up or do you get little pieces left behind everywhere. I ask because I was messing with it the other day and pressed it against my brand new tv remote control and it stuck everywhere and in between the buttons. [banghead]
