Markings for the 761st Tk Bn ?

After reading about the 761st Tk Bn I decided to build a 76mm sherman from their Bn. However when I find photos all I see are the stars on the front and sometimes the sides. I am trying to figure out what the correct markings were. Can anyone help me out? Thanks Greg.

Greg - I’ve been researching the 761st for some time now, and I find the same as you do/did - few bumper codes in the ETO seem to appear in photos. Perhaps mud/dirt obscured them, I speculate… I worked off of the photo in Joe Wilson’s book to model one of their tanks. I plan on modeling more in the future - good luck! If the photo link does not work, I can send to your e-mail address. Let me know… Jim

I also have an interest in this unit but thought they just used M5 Stuarts until I did some more research.
Found a little to help but here goes.

Corgi put out “Cool Stud” which was one of their tanks. You can check with this site to see about purchasing or more pics http://www.mikes-tanks.com/CorgiShowcase.htm

But I have also seen a diecast of this tank as a 76mm armed version like Jim did so not sure which (if either) is correct. By the way, nice job Jim.

And there is more info on the unit website.

Couple of good books out but not sure what they have for pics are:

Brothers In Arms : The Epic Story of the 761St Tank Battalion, WWII’s Forgotten Heroes
by: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Anthony Walton

Patton’s Panthers : The African-American 761st Tank Battalion In World War II
by: Charles W. Sasser

Thanks Phil. I can’t see the photo appearing in the link I provided - figured I’m doing something wrong… I have both those books, I recommend them highly too. I plan on completing “Taffy” next - since “Taffy” and “Cool Studs” often lead their colums when they went into battle. I also read that the 761st upgraded to M24 Chaffee’s and M26 Pershings while in Germany after VE Day - those would be pretty interesting to model too… Jim

Thanks, the photo of “counter attack” shows some of the faded numbers. I emailed the 761st web site and asked them to post some photos on their site that showed the vehicle markings. Greg

Jim,
There are a couple of pics on their website of Chaffee’s but again, not much detail on markings.
Does it seem odd that only us modelers care what the markings were and the guys living in them just cared that they didn’t blow up on them.
Had kind of the same thing with a pilot our club just built a model for. Flew P-47’s over France so we could get the squadron code but he couldn’t remember his plane code or serial #.
Anyway, if you come up with anymore good pics, make sure to post them or a link.
