Marder II Tank Crew Uniforms

I’ve been wondering about the color of the tank crew uniform for tamiya’s marder II, and my question is should i do the uniform in the green like it is on the box or should i throw caution to the wind and go with a grey uniform. opinions help etc are always appreciated. thanks in advance guys.

The Germans were really big into fashion statements when it came to uniforms, and colors, FireFox31! The styles, and types of uniforms they fielded, are as varied, and numerous as the stars in the sky. I personnally agonize over this dilemma everytime I want to add figures to a build. I know that someone out there can recommend a good site that will illustrate, and approximate the time frame that these colors were most common, although I believe there is a lot of overlape from what little I’ve explored. I believe and am not sure, but I think SPG’s fielded Field Gey uni’s. That seems to back up my other builds.

whew, i was hopin you were gonna say that tigerman, i cant imagine a green uniform on a marder tank crew unless they were in mabey the ardennes or somewhere along those lines, so field grey it is.

mostly issue field gery xf-64

Basic German uniform Info:
Early in the war, the standard German Heer uniform was a field grey (much more green coloured) tunic with grey trousers and the tunic collars were a dark green. The greyer field grey uniform was not introduced until 1943. The collar of the tunic was then the same colour as the rest of the uniform. That said, the pattern of the uniform varied depending on the arm of service, ie one piece and 2 piece overalls were issued to some soldiers, the Panzer/Stug uniform was of a different cut black for the panzers and field grey for the Stug crews, and the SS Panzer uniform was also a different cut.

Then the uniform used in North Africa and the Balkans was completely different again. If you want more detailed info I suggest you try get a hold of some reference books like Ospreys 5 part Men at arms series on the German Army 1939 -1945, from which these pics were taken.

From memory, the uniform on the crew in the kit is the older style cut with collar insignia and shoulder tabs. Hope this helps.

yea it helps alot actually. getting ref. material and such is a whole different ballgame, i dont get the chance to go to my hobby shop to get my books so its kind of touch and go sometimes, that and money is an issue as always heh.
