man of war

what is a nice scale and kit for something from the war of 1812? Some man of war type vessel, english or american. I guess the famous kit is the constitution, are there others and who makes them. Where is the best selection?

In the line of plastic models Revell produced only two The Constitution and the Unitied States, the differance being the United States’ Capt ordered the shipwright to build a raised Poop deck, which made her turn like a drunk pig and waddle like one. It added 9 tons of dead weight to the stern over the rudder.

Others were produced in 1/100th. scale many in the Heller line, Monogram made a few, thier USS Constitution is more accurate than Revells, but lacking in “super” detail… Lindberg poped a few. The rest are poor copies.

Which models would you like to start with? Sailing warships are some of the hardest to rig because of the period rigging to the upper topsail mast & yards. Very small and fragile.

If you are looking for a wooden kit there is the Lively from The Lumberyard. It is a Virginia pilot boat that was converted to a privateer. The model is not of a specific vessel but of a type. The scale is either 3/16" = 1’ or 1/4" = 1’ and the rigging is fairly simple. I’m actually thinking of doing this one as a scratch-build project.
